I have seen this type of wear on the right (I live in Australia) side of the tyre caused by the road camber, course road surface and long straight runs in the outback.

The bike is completly stripped at the moment and all the recommended jobs will be done.

Actually the noise occurs at any point in the acceleration / deceleration process and does sound rather diesel like.
But just so that I do not offend Hilda - No more lugging - I promise.

I have checked the exhaust as I had to remove it to put a helicoil in for the crashbar mounting bolts - I can see no cracks there though all the header gaskets were well flatt ...
