Just fitted a brilliant 180 degree rear view mirror to my 1998 K1100LT SE
It's a Riderscan and cost me approx. £40 - a small price to pay to stay alive !

Don't put 'friction modifiers' or reducers in the engine oil, the starter sprag clutch needs to have friction to work!!!

Nice fix, instead of JB weld, I would have selected the hole saw size to match a blind grommet (bung). How did you keep the swarf out of the crankcase?

OK I'll warn you now, it ain't pretty, but against BMW service's cost for doing it, or two days stripping and rebuilding after, it works for me...

About all you can do is to visually inspect it for evidence of heating/blueing, notchy u-joints, tearing rubber insert, condition of splines.
How common is the rubber insert failing?
