So, I went out for a Sunday afternoon ridei n the desert yesterday. It was 80+ and my mesh jacket is at home so I just rode in a t-shirt and jeans. I must say that I really do enjoy riding that way, the breeze and the sunshine feel great. I do tone down my riding a bit when riding like that - especially on hte RS.
At home, I usually try to ride ATGATT most of the time but will "cheat" and ride in Levis - and I like to wear a half helmet on the LT.
Just curious how religious others here are about ATGATT. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I always thought a good pair of jeans was riding gear.
If actual riding/armored pants are a part of "all" of the gear, then I guess you could say that I never ride with "full" gear on.
I also wear a shorty helmet when it gets warm, but find it difficult to go sans jacket. Somehow the jacket, especially an armored one, makes me feel the most secure.
Oh and i'll never ride without a helmet. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

when in my teens and twenties it was less was better... flip flops... shorts... sun glasses... no helmet laws in indiana...
my first dose of reality was when some of our regular group of 6 to 12 were riding on a congested one lane state highway with lots of stop lights... there was a guy we didnt know in front of us on kz1000... we were not wearing helmets... he was...
it was a mile or so of open road to the next light... the light turned yellow and the lady in the convertable camero in front of us locked it up instead of going though the intersection... we had time to stop...
the guy on the kz didnt... he hit her bumper and his neck hit the top of her windsield... his body was in her front seat and his helmet with its contents was 200 feet down the road...
after that... one of my buddies started wearing jeans... jean shirts... and a bell star full face helmet... one night after riding all day he was in his neighorbood approaching is favorite esses... he nailed the first but didnt make it out of the second...
the helmet saved his life... the jeans were no protection... nothing broken but the road rash was incredible... it was really nasty...
after that we all wore bell star helmets... leather jackets... leather chaps... none of us went down since... now my friends are all harley all the time... they are back to shorts... t shirts... no helmets...
i have seen too many motorcycles down during our travels... either in person or on tv... its not good... so i got a tourmaster/cortech mesh jacket and mesh pants with the 2 stage water/wind liner and thermal liner... symax helmet... vanson gloves... and bates enforcer boots... still looking for the right boot though...
i plan on atgatt... i even got the wench to gear up... she plans on atgatt too... we will have to see how it works out... it may not be the best gear available but we think its the right approach...

Usually wear riding boots, armoured jacket, open face helmet, spectacles & shades, gloves, jeans & my pipe!
However, when in a rush, running local or it's getting kin hot. Have ridden in:-
Sandals, T shirt (K og of course), my best (only) lounge suit, boiler suit. sometimes without gloves. As I feel vulnerable, usually 20mph slower than normal.
NEVER in shorts (not got the legs for it)
As a child of the 60's, a blast around the estate would dry my hair (helmets optional then).
IMHO if we were really concerned about survival we wouldnt ride at all:!:
For me it's a calculated risk. Perhaps we should all wear less armour & ride accordingly, maybe there would be less accidents.
Duck, seems we have a similar attitude.
Mines fatalist, no amount of gear will protect one when one screws up BIG time. Rather be in a box wearing a big stupid grin than a cabbage. _________________ Regards Tim,

I do ATGSOTT/SOTGATT but aspire to ATGATT. I sometimes skip the boots when I'm going for a short trip to the store in town or something like that. And I only wear riding pants about half of the time, skipping them for the aforementioned short trips and for commuting in the hot summer weather. I have two pairs of pants but I don't like either one. I need to find some pants that are more comfortable, especially in warm weather, and which are easy to take on and off.

| quite a few years ago i went down hard in a pair of levis, sneakers, dainese leather jacket, helmet and kevlar gloves. the denim did a pretty good job of keeping me OK, but the sneakers took the worst of the fall. ground off the laces, took off the shoe (!). I still wear levis for commuting. |

Scary. Or as my daughter would say, "Ewwww!"
I wear all gear most of the time, some gear all of the time. Minimum protection: armored textile jacket, boots, gloves and modular skid lid. The armored pants (mesh, with removable liner) are worn when I get out of town.
My helmetless days pretty much ended with the onset of parenthood. _________________ tlp

I always wear at minimum a full face helmet, lightly armored jacket, jeans, and gloves, having had a few wrecks when I was in my 20's where the gear saved my ass bigtime. Sometimes I wear boots, and sometimes textile pants. Can't fit comfortably into the leathers anymore. A few years back when I was lane-splitting into San Francisco on my first RS I used an Aerostich Roadcrafter one-piece, and once you get the system down they are awesome. Keep in mind I wore it over a suit and tie.
I would fold my suit coat on top of my dress shoes in one saddlebag, laptop bag went in the other. When I would get to the parking garage, I would be out of the suit in 10 sec (as advertised), put on my dress shoes and suit coat, and stow the aerostich in one saddlebag, the riding boots in the other. I would always walk in with the helmet because I didn't mind the attention. If you make it a habit, it becomes easy, and gear like that makes you feel a lot safer in traffic. Unfortunately the Stich got too tight so I sold it and plan to get another when I start riding more. _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

Yeah, I've been noticing that with some of my dress pants over the last couple years. What's the deal? It's not like they're getting washed and dried on high heat. I think there must be a garment manufacturer planned-obsolescence time-release shrinking fabric conspiracy. And maybe they're in cahoots with corporate fast-food restaurants... _________________ tlp

| The only gear I ever skimp on is wearing jeans instead of riding pants on short trips into town. Helmet, boots, jacket and gloves are always on. Finally bought an armored mesh jacket last summer so now there's no excuse to not gear up for every ride. |

I guess we all have to stick with the helmet laws wherever we happen to be, but given my druthers, I'd go for the underwear and baseball cap. I find that I ride a lot safer dressed that way. When I see some of the cowboys riding like they are on a race track, just because they are "safe" in their kevlar suits, it scares me.
I maintain that if cars had bald tyres, no brakes and a big sharp spike sticking out of the centre of the steering wheel, the roads would be a lot safer place. But until then, watch out for the drivers in hats guys, they're the real killers out there.
Be safe

I always wear a helmet, jacket w/ armor, gloves and boots, with either textile pants or jeans. IMO there are waaay to many yahoos and brainless morons driving around here to ride with any less protection. _________________ Blair Rawls

I wear a flat hat in the cage, just so others keep a wide berth.

Here, Here.
Lot less trouble, when cars had chassis's, no crumple zones, wooden brakes, no ABS & Ralph Nader was only a twinkle in his dads eye. _________________ Regards Tim,

Seen too much blood and guts on the roads first hand not to ATGATT. Leather jeans (with armour), Leather Jacket (with armour) in the summer, Textile Jacket (with armour) in the winter, steel plated boots and good gloves. At present I have a Shoei full face, but will be buying something new soon. Gravelrash is simply not worth the risk and I have 4 kids I'm responsible for so it's brainless for me to do otherwise. But of course it won't happen to me anyway.... Will it.... Surely not me.... _________________ 1980 CB900FA

Hmmm, I will admit that I am clueless as to what either of the acronyms mean. I always wear a full face helmet, boots, riding jacket. sometimes I will wear jeans but in could weather I wear my warm riding bibs and in hot weather I wear my mesh armored riding pants. Feel better with them on. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I am ATTGATT most of the time. Short run to corner store I don't do the armoured pants.
Wear, full face, gloves, boots, textile armoured pants and jacket.
Don't like pain but can deal with some discomfort of the gear.
Only one serious dump, and good boots, jacket and gloves saved the bacon. Was in good enough shape to keep but cheeks off of the ground at the time. _________________ Life is short & eternity beckons. |
