It's good to be alive isn't it. I hit a dog and went down the road into oncoming traffic 34 years ago and lived to tell the story. Last year I had a deer run between me and the car in front of me, and after closing my eyes I swear I could feel the tail hit my left hand. Let's just say I don't drive at night anymore. I turned around and went home that night to change my underwear.
Glad to hear your gonna make it, thanks for all the tips and info thru the years.

Hi, All,
I saw the orthopedic surgeon today. He removed both casts - from my left hand (dislocated thumb) and right arm (broken right arm, collarbone and cracked shoulder blade). The x-rays show the arm is healing in the right position. I now have a rubberized covering for the left hand and a neoprene splint on the right upper arm. I'll be able to shower but, most important, also be able to wipe my own butt!! As Harriet says, she now knows another meaning for "worse" in the line, "For better or for worse". I'm getting better day by day. I thank all of you for your support and your prayers. I owe you big time!

Hi, All,
Thanks for the continuing comments. Slowly seem to be recovering. I see the Orthopedic Surgeon on Tuesday to determine if he needs to put a pin into my upper arm.

The bike is in the carport. In my condition, I haven't been able to do much and won't be able until my arm and shoulder are almost normal. The fairing looks pushed in one direction and the forks in the other. I don't know if the frame is bent, and won't until I can remove the fairing and have a good look. If I were to rebuild it (i.e., the frame turns out to be straight), at the minimum I would need a new upper fairing, lower right fairing, right crash bar and mountings, fairing mount, right saddlebag, repainted fuel tank and topbox cover, new front fender (both pieces) and new fork tubes.

I have Markel insurance, the one "recommended" by BMW. I don't have a check yet, but this is the gist of what I've been told. The book value is $4700. We'll total it at 70% of that. Since the adjuster estimated the damage at very close to that (I think about $3200) and since you said you want to keep the bike even if totaled, we'll send you a check for the 70% less your deductible. So I expect a check for about $2900; I get to keep the bike; the bike is NOT "totaled" so it doesn't get a salvage title. If I don't rebuild it, I'll have a LOT of K1100 parts for sale!

I got the hint something happened to you from some of the tech posts, but I haven't been frequenting the campfire section of the forum and hadn't seen Harriet's post. I wish you well. I am also healing from an accident. I fell off ladder at work and broke my left heel 7/5. I see my ortho dr. tomorrow. Hopefully he will let me continue to walk with out crutches.

I am a Psychologist by trade and also trained in Rehabilitation Counseling. In addition, my further qualifications include having crashed, been through rehabilitation and dealt with the insurance company vultures from Dairyland (whom I will be leaving when my policy comes up for renewal).
