Hi all
I have recently bought a 92 K1100LT with just over 50,000k on it.
We picked it up in Canberra and once we sorted the tyre pressures and suspension, rode the 1200k home to Brisbane with no problems.

These bikes really are a well kept secret. Goes well, handles well and is comfortable for both myself and SWMBO.

Yesterday we went for a short ride and the bike sounded loud and course on both acceleration and deceleration. (sounded like a loud induction roar)

Any thoughts on this.

One problem I did find was the snorkel was off the air box. Would this be sufficient to create the noise.

As a new person to these bike I would appreciate input into what to look into whilst I have the bike stripped down.

Did you check the header bolts. They are prone to coming loose.

While you're down there, Alistair, have a close look at where the header pipes join the collector. They have a tendancy to crack and break off. It's not that easy to spot because the pipe will still be held in place by the header bolts. I didn't know mine was broken right through until I took the exhaust off to take my transmission out. I had it welded up by a friend who is accomplished at welding stainless. He commented that stainless is not a good metal to make exhaust systems from as that happens all too often.

I have checked the exhaust as I had to remove it to put a helicoil in for the crashbar mounting bolts - I can see no cracks there though all the header gaskets were well flattened with some leaking by the look of them.

Guess I won't know, till I put it all back together

Snorkle out of the airbox could make things noisy. Check the header bolts as well. Don't know if you were lugging the engine, but my K 1100 RS spanks me with noise when I do this; ("You VILL NOT lug der K-bike und if you do, ve have vays to punish you)-This quote came directly from BMW Corporate Offices under the signature of Dr. Hilda Von Diesel, Mistress of Disclipline.

Enjoy the good riding weather down under as opposed to the shitty riding weather in the Northeastern U.S.

Actually the noise occurs at any point in the acceleration / deceleration process and does sound rather diesel like.
But just so that I do not offend Hilda - No more lugging - I promise.

Thanks for the response - indeed thanks to all.

The bike is completly stripped at the moment and all the recommended jobs will be done.
Its so frustrating, all I want to do is go for a ride.

I think they are noisy compared say to a Honda 4 cyl.Depends what you had before.

I have both and I find the K loud. I think a lot of the noise is transmission - sometimes reminds me of a car in reverse, you know that whining noise. The Honda has a 'tight' power noise! !

I have read that the gearbox is noisy.

Hello All
Just some feedback after my last post. (Noisy Under Load)

After a strip down (the bike not me) change of oils, a valve adjustment and getting the brick tuned, the one thing that eliminated the noise I was hearing was the replacement of the alternator rubbers.

Not only does the old girl go well but she sounds sweet as well.

Mine roars most under acceleration & in top gear at 60. Cure, ride at 80, the noise is carried away on the wind. I have had 3 K11's the second a 95 model, was the quietest. That one had recently had it's inlets balanced.
