|
|
My name is Rene Portegies, I am Dutch and a new member of this forum. I ride a R1200S as well as a K1100RS . Recently I bought the K1100RS (Black/Silver color) second hand from somebody in Germany. Maintenance reports are with the bike, mileage low (around 20000). So far, the bike rides very well, no issues but when a few weeks ago the dealer replaced my rear wheel tyre, the following appeared : Oil from the drive shaft is leaking out of the holes where the bolts fit in when the wheel is mounted. When the wheel is mounted there is no oil leakage. I tried again, so last Saturday I removed the rear wheel again and again oils leaks out of the holes where the bolts fit into. Not enormous amount of oil but still it leaks.
As the dealer cannot explain this (he just looks very amazed himself) I am now trying to get advice via the internet as I do hope somebody with good technical expertise with this bike can explain this.
Your help/advice is much appreciated.

Hi, Rene,
First, your driveshaft does not run in oil, so the oil isn't coming from there. Looking at the parts fiche, about the only way oil could be getting onto the lug bolts is from a leaking oil seal. If it doesn't leak while the wheel is mounted, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If it DOES leak and oil gets all over your wheel, I would have it fixed as soon as possible. Never having had to replace an oil seal in the final drive, I can't give you advice there. Maybe one of the other K11OG posters can. Good Luck!

Phil, thanks. No oil is leaking when the wheel is mounted. The dealer did check the oil seal and according to him, the oil seal is fine. As you are referring to a parts fiche, is there a way I can look at it or how I can get the fiche |

I looked at the crownhweel/wheel bolts holes from an finaldrive I have taken apart, and the thing is made of aluminium and steel together. So I guess you have some sort of leak where the two metals are pressed together. To seal it, take the crownwheel out, clean it and use some glue/ sealant. Or buy a new one..$$$
Or another tought, maybe the old owner have pumped oil into the threads to lubricate them? Clean it out with breake cleaner and compressed air. Wait and see if any more oil appears.

K1100SR, thanks. I will have a look at the part fiches to get a better understanding how it all fits together. I do not understand your second thought, what do you mean by pumping oil into the threads

To lubricate the bolt threads with oil before he was torquing it.. Some does, I have seen that on autos.. Pumping everything full with one of this: But as I said ,just a tought.
But if so, you can flush it out with solvent/brake cleaner. _________________ 93 K1100RS TIC-8PSI hlins rear,WP springs front, 2,62 final drive, K12RS 5" rear wheel
