Can anyone help!
My R1100RS is overheating after just 2 miles, one day it was fine, the next the gauge climed up to red. I've replaced the thermostat & coolant but with no luck. I think it may be either the temperature sensor or a failed fan. Does anyone know at what stage the fan should kick in? When the temp gauge is on the red mark I still can't see the fan working. What's the best way of testing both the temperature sensor and fan without dismantling.
Cheers

There must be a way to short the fan to see if you can get it to spin manually. Someone here maybe able to help locate where it connects to the main loom. Alternative, with the same connection is to see if there's continuity through the fan - can you complete a circuit through it.
With my KLT the fan usually kicks in when the needle is one 'segment' past the halfway mark - if that makes sense. It hits this a lot even in winter when I ride to work, sitting in city traffic for more than a few minutes will send the temp up.
Good luck with it.

I didn't know the R1100RS came with a fan.
IF, however it is a K-Bike, you can run a diagnostic in the Motronic to test the fan and the fan relay.

Also note that it could be your temp gauge or it's sensor - which is different from the temp sensor which drives the Motronic.
Does the overheat light ocme on in the cluster? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I had the same problem and the fan relay was broken. Just change the the horn relay to place of fan relay so you can test if that's the problem.

While there may an issue with fan or relay.
I don't think that is your problem. Normally unless you are riding in extremely hot temps, 2 miles is too short to get hot enough to cause my fan to come on. My guess would be your coolant is not circulating....or you are really low on oil. _________________ Kipp

IN my KLT, the fan enters when the gauge is almost over the red line.
Last time I put the Motul MoCOOL Radiator Fluid pure in the system, and the engine runs with lower temperatures, it seems.
And here the temperatures reach almost 95°F!

Thanks all for your input, it turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor linked to the temperature gauge.
