PostPosted: Sun Mar 16, 2008 9:48 pm    Post subject: Latest mods to my RS Reply with quote

First off, I replaced the parking light in the healdight with a bank of LEDs:

I wouldn't normally go through all of that effort to do that mod but I was pulling things apart inside the fairing anyhow to install the brackets for new criving lights. The ones I have on the calipers are actully dual fog/driving lights with two bulbs and although I really like the fog lights, the driving lights are pretty worthless. I defintely need more for night riding at any decent speed.

So, after some transient dropped some RS mirror mounts in my lap, I decided to add some Hella FF50s since I like them so much on the LT. I padded them with 1/8" thick industrail grade rubber to protect the fairing. Wit hthat and the thickness of the mounts, it pushes the mirros out about 1/3" which should improve the mirror visibility a bit.

Afrer redoing the belly pan and raidator grills on my K75S project with perforated stainless, I had some leftover. Thought it might look good in the sides of the RS. Yes, it will probably trap a bit more heat but hopefully my other heat-related mods will offset that. And it didn't cost me anyhting other than some effort. I dont' have the belly pan on in this pic but you get the idea - they should look pretty nice if the sun ever comes out. Rolling Eyes

I also reaplced the low tone Fiamm horn on the right side with a Stebel Nautilus air horn. This puppy is loud!!! (139 dB) I left the high tone Fiamm in the left side to be activated by the factory horn switch. For the Stebel, I swapped in a late LT left switch assembly with the windscreen button. The bottom position does the Stebel and the top positon serves as the ABS switch that I'd moved to the back earlier when I filled up the dash slots with other switches.

It;s a tight fit and I had to make a custom bracket to hold it:

Here's the new swtich:

Now I have at my thumb both the high tone Fiamm on the factory horn switch as my "polite" horn (which is still pretty loud by itself) and on the green button I have a latte-spilling air horn that will make people think a Mac truck is about to run them down. Twisted Evil

Then it was on to the heat mitigation mods:

1) Adding a swtiched low speed fan. I did this using a 6ohm 50W load resistor. It's wired into the low position on the heated grip swtich. I did this for three reasons:

a) I don't want to add extra add-on switches.

b) After my LT tried to self-imolate a few weeks ago, I'm reluctant to use the low HG setting ever again.

c) I figure that if it's cold enough to need heated grips(the high settingo nthe switch) then heat management won't be an issue.

2) Insulated all of the fuel lines with the fuel line insulation that was used on some K75s. It took about five 170mm sections to insualte everything I could without ripping the air box and plenum off.

3) Added a "Johnny Blanket"(TM Owstrich) of foil-backed bubble wrap under the tank, battery covers and under the front of the seat.

Hopefully all of this will get rid of the RS heat issue.

Nice mods, Duck Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Can you post a picture of how the belly pan vents look now?
I like your mesh idea, how did you attach the pieces to the fairing? They don't make a mesh sticker Twisted Evil

You need to make the parking light LEDs red and chase, so it looks like a Cylon from the original Battlestar Galactica...

I didn't do the belly pan. My comment was just because the bike had the belly pan off in the picture. I only had enough stainless left over from the K75 to do the side vents. That stuff's expensive. It cost me $75 for a 12x24 sheet of it.

I got it from this place. They're in Seattle so I just went and bought it but you can order from them:
http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=13524&step=4&id=1002&top_cat=1

As to how I attached them - that's a secret. I shaped some blocks of arylic to fit and were more or less level. Then I drilled and tapped them to to reccieve bolts. Then I fiberglassed them to the inside of the fairing panel. It's not pretty inside (but nobody sees it.)

I'll snap a pic next time I have one of the lowers off.

And here's what my bike looks like now if you pull the tank and open the relay box:

I had to move the starter relay to make room for the six relays I've added. High beam, low beam, fog lights, dirving lights, Stebel horn and the low speed fan thing.

My aux fuse block was already filled so I also had to add in-line fuses for the horn(that thing draws 18 amps!) and low speed fan thing in the relay box. Shocked

There's not much room left in there. Rolling Eyes It's not as compicated as it looks though. And I've done color-coded wiring diagrams for all of my mods in case some poor sot ever buys the bike from me someday.

I particularly like the front side/parking light mod. Will you be adding the mod to your range of LED mods for sale/ If you do stick my name down for one and I'll sort out the clock LED's at the same time.

Since it takes quite a bit of work to even get to the point where the headlight lens will come off to do this I hadn't really thought of making kits for this mod.

But, what the heck, when I do the same thing to my LT in the near future, I will take some pictures of the prodcedure, get the LEDs and hardware required, do a full write-up and put together some kits to sell.

Great mods like always. I am particularly interested in the Mirror mounts for the Hellas. Are these available out there somewhere? Do you have any better pictures? What are they made of?

thanks,
Kipp

I got those used and had to touch up the paint a bit on them. I don't know if anyone ever made those to stock or if they're custom.

I'll try to take some pics of them next time I have my bike and camerai nthe same place.

Great thanks. How many of the 3 mirror mounting bolts does each use? I am guessing 2....

Here's some better pics. They essentially follow the outline of the mirror extender with a part that sticks down and then is bent out. They could probably be 1/4 large as they're just a tad smaller than the mirror exteneder but for what I paid for them (nothing) I can't complain.

Since it was somewhat sunny I too kthe RS out for a little spin:

1) Johnny's blanket thing seems to work pretty well. Normally I would've felt a little heat on my thighs - none today. Can't wait to try it in HOT weather. Good idea, Johnny! Very Happy (The LT will get a blanket tomorrow.)

2) I was quite surprised at how much pushing the mirrors out just 1/3" helped rear visibility.

I'm interested in these mirror extender thingys you have fitted. Will they fit an LT and where can I get some from?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

There are diffrent but similar mounts for the LT. I don't think anyone makes them anymore. I got mine on eBay I think.

Thanks for the reply F.D. I'm also looking at the spacer bits that move your mirrors further out from the fairing. Are these still available? If so where from? I like the idea of being able to have a clearer veiw of what's attacking from the rear.
