Last summer while riding the bike down a dirt road at 20-25 mph for about 7-8 miles the engine died suddenly when I stopped to ask directions.

When I tried to start it it would not start. The bike would crank just fine but it would not start. About 45 minutes later it started and ran fine for a couple of thousand miles on that trip without a hitch.

The bike never overheated but it certainly was warm after running at the slow speeds for several minutes.

What could have caused that problem? Airheads sometimes encounter a similar situation due to the heat sink paste drying out on the electronic ignition module. Is there a similar ignition module that needs the heat sink paste to be renewed on the K11?

Yes, there's a similar thing on the early K11s.

But my guess would be sidestand switch.

My thoughts are that if it's the HES going that he would not get another "couple thousand" miles w/o having the problem reoccur.

If it's a recurring problem then the HES can be tested by pouring some cold water on the small timing cover plate when it fails - that should cool the HES and allow the bike to run again.

Conversely, you could pull off the small timing cover plate and hit the HES with a heat gun or hairdryer. If that causes the bike to fail then the HES is on it's wat out.
