|
|
Question for those knowledgeable about BMW ABS.
Before I yank it out, I had a thought. Somewhere I thought I read that when the system encounters a braking situation where the two wheels rotate at different speeds or one completely locks up on a loose surface, the system may go into "fault", and the diagnostic equipment at a BMW dealer is the only way to clear it. Is this true?
Here's why I ask. The current problems I am having with my ABS occurred between last Sunday's rides. The ABS worked fine in the morning. I came home, ate lunch and when I went back out with Cathy for a P.M. trip to the grocery the ABS showed fault.
The different wheel speeds definitely occurred when I came home from the morning ride. We live on a dirt road and the last section is a short steep curve down to the garage. I use rear brake only on that section so the front doesn't wash out and even though I did go slowly, the rear wheel probably locked up on the very loose surface.
Possible cause?
The pin #2 to ground clear has not worked (did it several times), neither did the rolling reset.
Any final thoughts on this before the ABS-ectomy?
Thanks,

Not exactly.
Once the system is initialized, if you put it on the center stand and let the rear wheel spin, it can cause the fault you mentioned.
If you were trying to stop and one wheel approached lockup, the ABS would release the pressure on that one wheel until it was spinning again. That action does not cause a fault.
Did you read the fault codes? What error do you get? ABS-I or ABS-II?

Mick,
Thanks for the response. I have ABS-1 (have an ABS can visible on each side of the bike)
Never felt any kind of ABS activity when I was on that loose material.
When I did the Pin 2 diagnostic, came up with 6 flashes, which should be the ABS relay. But could it fail in the hour or so between rides?
This ABS stuff feels a bit like black magic or ??
Thanks again,

Yes,
That relay can fail permanently or intermittently at ANY time. You 'could' try just replacing that relay. There is a Hella equivalent relay HL66126, about $14 BMW thinks they are worth big bucks, P/N 61311459676
http://www.rallylights.com/hella/Relay_Mini_SPST_12v.asp#66126
The above is the Hella link. _________________ Mick McKinnon

Mick,
Thanks for the info & the relay cross reference. Will give it a try and let the forum know how it turns out.

Mick:
Have you ever seen a 676 realy come out of an ABS I bike? I've pulled apart several ABS I bikes and they've all had the 677 relay. (At least thaqt's what'so ne the little blue relay case.)

Yes,
My bike (08/1992) has the 61 31 1 459 676 ABS-I power relay. So does Jeff's and his is just a little older than mine. Is that '677' relay a half-size or mini relay? Sounds like the fuel pump, fan horn relay and not the power relay. P/N 61311459675 is the ABS warning relay.
