Just got my bike (95 K1100LT 24K miles) back from my local independent service shop. I had been complaining about the clutch adjustment, so they checked it at the lever and below for adjustment. They say that it’s slipping because the front tranny seal is (most likely) leaking into the clutch and causing slip. It’s not bad yet, so they advise me to continue to ride until it gets worse and then have them replace the driven disk and re-seal the transmission.
Could this be something other than the transmission leaking? Nothing is leaking out the bottom. I’m told that that means that it’s not the rear engine seal.
Can I cause a further problem by letting it slip? Degree of current slip: crack the throttle in the higher gears and she’ll gain 100-150 RPM before accelerating.

i rode three years with a leaking main engine seal, so unless labor rates go up dramatically i don't see it as much of a problem, pay em now or pay em later. it's going to cost the same $2500.00 or so us dollars.
other half is murphy says if you take a long trip the whole thing will fail at the worst possible moment and at the farthest point away from home during the trip.

It may well just be the clutch going by the sound of it. The seal really needs to be flowing to put oil on the clutch, and contrary to popular belief, they DO wear out. I've had two go so far just from wear. People who have them last for ages.. Well, I see them all the time, and I pass them. IMHO, they don't stand up to spirited riding, or even worse, spirited riding with a pillion.
Why don't you do the job yourself? In the BMW PDF manual it takes up no more than a page, as you can just slide the whole assembly, wheel and all, back. I'm just about to do this job myself, after eliminating the arm's adjustment, though I definitely have plenty of free play at the lever.. I'll let you know how I get on. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Actually they told me about $800 for a tranny seal. I talked to some other K-bikers who suggested it could also be an "alternator drive seal". at cheaper still.
I'm really hoping it's not $2500, 'cause that's half of what I paid for the bike two years ago.

At an independent shop $600-800 is reaonsable.
If you were doing it yourself, I'd recommend just cleaning up the clutch plate with brake cleaner. But if you're spending all that money you might as well have a new clutch plate installed. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

That makes no sense whatsoever.
It's either the seal around the clutch push rod - which is at the back of the tranny and should cost less to replace - or the transmission input shaft seal as thye suggested.
If it's enough to foul your clutch plate then it will eventually make it to the weep hole. When it does, smell it. If it smells like sulphur, then it's coming from the tranny. If it's from the engine, it won't smell like sulphur.
If you're not going on any major trips then it won't hurt to let it gradually get worse and until it slips too much. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
