Help! Has anyone had the starter override clutch assembly out of their LT? My starter spins, but won't engage. I have replaced the relay, no luck. How can the starter spin and still be the problem? The battery is fully charged, and the starter spins strong, anyone ever heard of or experienced a starter drive failure?
Any pictures of the drive out there?
Thanks,

I have read ( possibly even on this forum), that if you can put the bike if 5th gear and roll it backwards that it possible to re-engage the starter clutches? Or even if you can push start it and run it to warm it up that the warm oils will help free it up.
Short of taking it apart to clean it.
Usually it's dirt that's gummed it up.
This is what I have read. Never experienced it, and hope I don't have to.
Check out this thread, and links within.

I don't have any pics but I found these 2 on another forum.

Thanks for the info Scott. I looked in the K100 shop manual and the information is useless. I wonder if the Clymer or Haynes has better detail? (I never should have included the Clymer with the K75 I sold. Note to self...Doh!)
I called the dealer just to see what the starter R&R would cost, they said 1.5 hours labor! I asked them if they were sure, and told them this is an ABS model. The service writer said all you have to take out is the battery tray to get at the starter. Hmmm...my experience says the battery tray is under the ABS modulator, maybe I should have taken him up on his offer. Seriously though, I fear the worst, so just to find out for myself what is involved I guess I'll have to take the intermediate housing off of one of my spare motors and check out the starter clutch assembly so I know what to expect if I have to go into my LT's motor. I know that the clutches are good on those motors, I can reach in the starter opening and rotate the drive gear in one direction only.
I tried turning the engine over in gear but to no avail. I have been running Castrol 20w50 and I think I'll go to the 10w40 synthetic and see what happens first. My thinking is that if the starter spins strong and the clutch does not engage then it must be sticking. I wonder if reversing the polarity to the starter motor and letting it spin the clutch backwards would free it up?
Sure wish someone on this forum has or knows someone who has lived through this and has the answer. I need the bike more now than ever, and it picked this timing to let me down.
I have a good low miles (40K) K1100LT motor and drive train, I wonder if it would be easier to just r&r motors at this point? Just put in a new clutch 5K milea ago....Hmmm...Comments anyone? _________________ Larry

To get to the starter sprag you have to remove the bellhousing.
If you can get the starter sprag to engage by rolling it backwards in gear and then get the bike started then you can try some additives:
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/sprag-clutch.shtml
Or you could start it by coasting down one of those big long hills in your neighborhood. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I had this problem with my K1 engined scorpion , I pulled the gearbox clutch bellhousing etc. and found no wear or dirt in the sprag clutch but it is all working fine now and I ended up doing the shims replacing the clutch plate , seal etc. I did strip and clean the starter itself , their was no gunge or dirt build up in the sprag and I am none the wiser as to what was wrong its still working fine. Reversing the starter wont help as it definitely wont engage in the wrong direction , maybe with the starter out you could try a load of "WD40" or similar through a pipe directed to the rhs in around the unit ?
Regards

Thanks Bill, I thought reversing the starter would possibly loosen up or jar whatever it is that is causing the clutch not to engage. I like the idea of trying to lube the assembly, if I can manage to get the starter out without removing the ABS modulator I will give it a go, otherwise I'll try changing the oil to a lower viscosity synthetic and run some Rislone through it. If that fails, I am SERIOUSLY thinking of swapping motors, anyone have a K1200 motor for sale ?

If you're gonna swap an engine in why not go for a 167hp K1200S. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

One great reason only-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Seriously, I got the bike running today. I put a 10 amp trickle charger on the battery, it's a grey BMW drycell, and spun the starter motor at full go until the starter clutch caught. The bike has been starting fine since. I am changing the oil to Castrol 10w40 Motorcycle specific grade. I am going to run a can of Rislone detergent engine flush through it before changing the oil, hoping that will free up the clutch mechanism.
By the way, the BMW battery is questionable, it has been flat too many times, so I popped down to the local battery shop and picked up the new Harley battery, it's about the same width and length as the BMW battery, and roughly an inch shorter in height. It is made by Deka, and seems very robust. What I like most about it is it has 270CCA, and 22Ah, more than the BMW battery, which is 230CCA and 19Ah.
Time for more electrical farkles......
I'll let ya'll know how it performs.

Be careful, this could lead to an infection by the dreaded leather chaps virus, often with secondary symptoms of sleeveless white vest worn over huge beer belly.

As well as the known virus called "chromeitis" with it's secondary symptom of "polishingsyndrome" and "harley elbow" _________________ Ride safe.
