I called a shop in the Salt Lake City area recently to get a quote on the 50,000 mile spline lube and this is what they had to say after quoting me $1000 for the lube: 'most guys don't do them because they figure if it hasn't failed by 50,000 miles it probably won't so they chance it because the repair isn't that much more than the spline lube itself...' Is this for real? From what I've read on this things can get real expensive if the spline lube isn't done in a timely manner. Or am I wrong? I'm not exactly jumping at the opportunity to spend $1000 if it's not necessary... _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

1. 1k is high for a spline lube.
2. That statement is one of the more asinine ones I have heard regarding spline lubes....do you really want to get your bike worked on at a place that feels this way? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

hell, it'd be cheaper to hop on the bike and ride up to Anderwerks in Calgary to get it done - plus, you'd get in a nice ride on the way.
I'm with OTG - I wouldn't let that shop touch the bike. Is that the only shop around? No independents? _________________ Jim

That WAS an independent. They claim they're cheaper than the BMW dealer. But I'll get a quote from the dealer next. _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

You know, I can see waiting until you have symptoms of dry splines (hard downshifting) but this statement is just plain daft:
| Quote: | | if it hasn't failed by 50,000 miles it probably won't |
$1,000 is A LOT for an indy shop.
Pay me a grand and I'll ride to your house from Seattle and do it for you. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Well, I got the quote from the dealer. $1080. With tax and stuff it'll be well over $1100 I guess I'm in the wrong part of the country _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

Have you considered doing this yourself? It is mostly a question of getting the back end of the bike off which takes time hence the high dealer prices. I took my time and did it myself - very doable for the DIY mechanic and saves a ton of money.
The most difficult from my own experience is getting the bolts out of the paralever which require heat and a breaker bar but otherwise not too bad. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

Look around for a local BMW club or get ahold of the BMWMOA book and call a few members.
In Salt Lake you can find someone who's done the job before that can help you at the first go of it, or at least advise you where to go to get it done resonably and correctly.
I find I get a better job if I do the work msyself, and at the very least, if I screw up:
1) Drink Lots of Beer to drown out all regrets.
2) Learn how not to do it that way again.
3) Learn how the bike works, so if you break down on the road, you can possibly get yourself going again.
Good Luck,
BTW who was the first "mechanic/shop" that gave the first of faulty advice? (Just in case I am in Salt Lake Broke down). |

Before I paid a dealer even $0.05 to do a spline lube I would ask what EXACT spline lube they would use. There are some really good spline lubes out there like HondaMoly-60, and some *really* bad ones like BMW #10 General Purpose (aka "the awful red stuff".) _________________

Could you guys all get together for a spline lube party?
Could be fun, all have a go, always better if there's help on hand.

I'm just about to get an entire new clutch (Friction, driven, the lot) and both seals fitted for 375UKP if that's any guide. It's a nice cheap place (Bemer Bikes in Essex, Russ is a gentleman), but it goes to show that they're out there.
I decided to go for that as there is no adjustment on the actuator arm and I've been slipping around on it for a while now, so no doubt there's plenty of damage, warping etc. Also there's a bit of gearbox oil seeping out of the hole under the bellhousing. I was going to do it myself, but the bike is needed daily, and I'd rather shell out and have a courtesy bike than risk ending up in a pile of bits with no bike
It's been over 10k miles now without too much trauma, so I suppose it was about time something big broke, still a PITA though.. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Question that's somewhat on topic...
I had the clutch replaced on my LT at 38k or so. Is a spline lube typically part of that?
I'm wondering because, if not, I'll probably need to get that done before too long. Not experiencing any symptoms. _________________ M N B

Hmm, he was only a partial moron. But I'll figure I'm probably good until roughly 100k... _________________ M N B

It was Motorcycle R&R in Salt Lake who gave me the first quote. Too bad, I got that adress from this forum a year or so ago. Thought I'd give them a try, they were supposed to know BMW's really well and also be a lot cheaper than BMW of Salt Lake (now known as Accolade motorsports). I guess that turned out to be wrong on both counts _________________ Silk Blue '94 K 1100 RS. |

Thanks, these forums are the best way to get the shops to shape up, as criticism is tough love, but in the end makes all better! I love the S&M of it all!!
What really gripes me over the years of riding K-bikes (since '85) is that even BMW dealers will go in and do clutch work, starter sprag work or whatever that requires removal of the transmission.
You get a nice invoice back describing the work they did, however, not a word about a spline lube in the paperwork which any Neanderthal would consider doing on reassembly!!
My K1100lt (second owner purchased) from my dealer in Modesto, who is very good, has a Rear Engine Seal replacement invoice from the previous owner, No Sline Lube mentioned, unless there is a way to do that job without Gutting the rear of the drive line to get to the seal, how is not the job done.
I asked did they do it, of course you get a verbal “but of course”, and that’s all you get however….
Make sure you get the statement with any of this kind of work, as its documentation is great for re-sale and piece of mind to say the least…. |

I'm not sure I'd want to see it listed on the bill. Everything that is described in the left hand side usually has a number associated with it on the right hand side of the bill. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Of course, even if they had the bike pulled apart for any other reason, they would still have to charge the book rate for the spline lube - sort of double billing, as it were. _________________ Jim
