Recommendations for a good shock- would like to have the ability to ride one-up (me- 180#) AND 2-up with camping gear (us- 320# plus tent, sleeping bags, clothes, etc...).

Any favorites to recommend? One brand better than the others? I don't mind spending the $$ if it improves the rear end of the bike- it is really bad now 2-up.

If $$$ is not an obstacle, 0hlins is the way to go. Very high quality, adjustanbe, rebuildable. Your bike will LOVE you for it

Friends,

I was at Ted Porters BMW shop getting a new tire this week. He's a pretty reputable independent wrench on the west coast (USA). He sells both Ohlins and Wilburs. His take was that the Ohlins are popular because they've sold a lot and everybody's heard of them. He suggested the Wilburs because they are custom built for each rider.

Anyone here have experience with the Wilburs on an LT?

I'd recommend a Wilbers 630. None of the frills you don't need, all the quality of an Ohlins and superior adjusters. I just got one for under $569 from Ted at The Beemershop http://www.beemershop.com.

FWIW I've had two Works Shocks. I got about 8000 - 10,000 miles out of each and I thought I was happy with them.

Then I put on an Olins!

Holy heck!! What a fantastic, fine tunable, PLANTED bike I suddenly was riding.

I'll never use anything else.

Here's the response from my friend , Tom, who works at Works Performance, regarding their shocks, spring kits and pricing:

Don, The shock for the K1100LT/RS is the Steel Tracker Series. It is available in the factory OEM length or in a short version that will lower the bike one inch at the wheel. The shock features triple rate springs in the stock length and dual rate springs in the short version. It has a remote reservoir for increased oil capacity and cooling, threaded pre-load (ride sag) adjustment and the ARS System. The ARS (Adjustable Rate Spring) System allows the rider to increase the spring rate by up to 50% in four separate steps. This feature allows you to go from solo riding to two up with baggage by making a simple hand adjustment, no tools required, and works independent of spring pre-load, so the adjustment only takes a matter of seconds . In addition to increasing load capacity, ARS can be used to firm the suspension for agressive sport canyon or road race style riding. All shocks are custom built for rider weight, riding style and skill level and come with a 30 day performance guarantee, 12 month parts and workmanship warranty and are fully rebuildable. The shock lists @ $479 USD. Works also offers a dual rate fork spring kit that will complement the rear shock. Firmer spring rates than the factory springs mean reduced diving under hard braking and more stable cornering. Dual rate springs offer an initial softer spring rate and a heavier final spring rate with the ability to tune the transition point in the fork stroke by using one of the three sets of crossover spacers provided. I have owned a WP shock for about 6 years and like it. It's an easy install. The remote reservoir clamps under the seat sub-frame with two rubber saddles so it's completely out of the way. The preload adjustment is a quick twist requiring no tools.

i did the saskatoon sproule deal...

since we ride fully loaded i weighed the motobrick and weighed us on the motobrick...

i gave all the data to tom... he was 50lbs low on their general guess at the loaded motobrick weight so they appreciated me rolling it over the scales...

they had to special order the spring for us so it took an extra week... he said their engineers earned their money figuring out the spring and valving for our heavy motobrick and our featherlite persons...

it has been flawless for 8,000 miles...

Hi OTG,

Unless your shock is different from mine, it won't have rebound adjustment, only preload and 'sag' (a bit of height adjustment- I believe).
I haven't felt the need to change the rebound- it's factory set. Tom helped me set the 'sag' on mine when he brought it to South Dakota when I bought it about five years ago. There's not much to it.
The install is quite simple. Takes about ten or fifteen minutes. The remote reservoir is mounted under the seat subframe with two hose clamps and rubber saddles.
The preload is simple to adjust. It's a lever that rotates to ride on different springs - a simple, but clever design.
I was told that it's a good idea to remove the unit if you store your bike in a frigid climate, such as we have here (the Great Frozen North) as the seals might fail in extreme cold. Still, it's only a few minutes every spring and fall to swap it over with the factory one, which I kept for that purpose.
