pre day .5... day .5... and day 1...

we were gonna go up nv 447 but were advised to stay away from burning man because there had been 3 bad wrecks on that stretch of lonely road and 1 fatality by the attendees... combined with our sparks nv hotel not allowing us to to leave out rig at the hotel for 5 nights... wednesday we scored 1 slabb of the ribb of the porcine and 1 giant ribb of bovine beast at the reno ribb cook off... thursday we headed to our job site in stead nv where they let us leave our rig...

we buzzed up the us 395 to susanville ca... we scored chicago style itialian beef sandwiches at mugsys chicago dogs and beefs...

took ca 139 out of susanville to ca 299 to alturas for the night... pelicans at eagle lake on ca 139...

friday we headed to lava beds national... the mosh pit lava tube...

fleener chmineys... globbs of volcano goo... these are what formed many of the formations that look like buttes...

this was once a chimney... the elements have smoothed it out from the chunky chimney of yesterday to this today...

the lava beds are enormous... impossible for micki to capture the depth of field...

mt shasta about a hundred miles away...

lizzy at petroglyph point...

rock art of the modoc indians...

then off to klamath falls for food and fuel... we saw a crowded local joint but we stopped at wingers... though it was a local place but it turned out to be a high priced corporate place... about a buck a wing...

down ca 97 to shasta...

since we have been to mt shasta and shasta lake before in the truck... we decided to try the cr a12 to yreka for the night...

more later...

day 2...

saturday we headed out on ca 96... the sasquatch trail... a beauty of a 2 up motobrick road...

i did see a squatch later in the day... but this poser took a liking to the motobrick...

we stopped at the frontier cafe in happy camp... there was a group of 4 waiting on their food... we ordered bisquets & gravy... 45 minutes later... without a coffee or water refill and no food i informed the lady that we were leaving... she said your orders up... so we stayed... it was terrible... a full order was 1 nasty bisquet cut in half with warm flour milk over the top... one bite and we were out of there... nasty...

did i mention ca 96 is a beauty of a 2 up motobrick road...

so we get to weitchpec and decided to take bald hills road to orick to see the redwood grove big trees and redwood creek... the bridge was closed but it looked safe so we went for it... as soon as we crossed there were berrys everywhere... had to snatch some up... only the ones above waist high... right gentlemen...

the road turned to goat then to gravel... the gravel was smooth so we proceeded... but the inevitable happened... washboard ruts and thick gravel... we pressed on... then the marine was so thick through switchbacks and dualsport territory but we pressed on... about 20 miles of this total before we hit asphalt again...

right after this 1st curve a sasquatch dressed like a bear ran across the road... didnt get a photo... it happened so fast...

redwood grove overlook... caint see nothing but the marine layer... o well...

california coast between orick and eureka...

this dood represented old coots on scoots with hawaii plates...

the lost coast brewery in eureka... home of downtown brown... this is some of the best food we have had in california... the stew was stewed in 8 ball porter... micki is still raving about it... the beef sandwich was roasted in downtown brown... simply wonderful... this place is highly recommended...

more later...

day 3...

we rolled down the 101 to grizzly bluff to ferndale to ride the lost coast...

the eel river...

ferndale... looks like a slice of paradise...

mattole road... starts smooth... goes to goat to gravel... back to goat and then opens up to the lost coast... saw 1 other vehicle on the road to the coast...

the lost coast... i guess so... 1 ranch... no other vehicles down here... beauty of a place...

river valley near honeydew...

steel frame wood floor bridge... there were lots of folks around here because they were having a big bbq shindig... smelled good... should have stopped for some local food...

then we found the big trees and rode the avenue of giants...

then to fortuna and the eel river brewery for lunch... my burger sucked... mickis sandwich looks good but the meat was cut too thick and with the grain making it hard to eat... she left one half of it on the plate... it was terrible...

then we took ca 36 to red bluff for the eveining... missed the 140 miles of swigleys sign... and didnt gat any photos because micki was either sleeping or trying to keep her eyes open...

what a 2 up motoroad that 36 is... it was splendid...

more later...

day 4...

we rolled out of red bluff on ca 36 for mt lassen...

the road through the park was good... new asphalt most of the way...

the scenery was outstanding...

mt lassen from the lookout on ca 44...

mt shasta from the lookout on ca 44...

harts cafe in susanville ca... the blue cheese burger was good... the monte cristo was fabulous...

then we headed back to sparks nv on usa 395... nothing to see on the 395... good thing because micki slept most of the way...

our rides start by having to take the motobrick off our truck... putting it back together... checking it all out... that means our rides end with having to take the motobrick apart... just mirrors and bags and misc other stuff ... sling it up... lift it into place sidways behind the rear glass on the truck bed... strap it down...

then off to fernley nv for tuesdays job... 1200 miles... 4 1/2 days... beautiful country... no regrets...

there you are...

Oh man, Wingers and those lava fields, that brings back some bad but hilarious memories. About 7 years ago me and the family were traveling back from Oregon to Denver. We had spent the night in Boise and had breakfast at the Kopper Kitchen. My middle child, Matthew then about 10, had strawberry waffles and hot chocolate.

We traveled most of the morning and early afternoon to Pocatello where we stopped at Wingers for a late lunch. They brought us water and a basket of popcorn which we began to eat. All of a sudden Matthew gets this strange look on his face and then he begins to vomit this horrible thick pink goo all over the table. Its like a never ending volcanic eruption. I couldn't imagine anyone holding that much crud in their stomach.

The waitress was very understanding and helped us clean up the mess (good tip). Needless to say our appetites were a bit suppressed after that. Piled back in the rig and drove on over to Little America for the night. He was perfectly fine for the rest of the trip. He still gets a bad ribbing from the family about that episode every once in a while.

Just thought I'd share. Laughing

Nice pictures by the way. You always have interesting pictures.

Great stuff Johnny, got to love off-roading on the motobrick.

Sorry your food sucked. Some of those place don't get enough people to make the food/cook decent.
