I noticed that in the maintenance intervals posted on the site, that it calls for "renew chain tensioner rail coating"every 36000 miles? What does it get renewed with? As long as my valve cover is off....I figured I would do it.
Thanks,
Joe |

To my knowledge it means replacing the chain rail tensioner guide.
And it's behind the front timing chain cover.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0536&mospid=47926&btnr=11_1821&hg=11&fg=30
When mine was in for valve work they replaced the following:
part #22 chain tensioner, $53.49
part #10 timing chain, $68.20
part #12 tension strap, $7.51
part #14 washer, x2 $1
part #13 shim, $1
part #16 eccentric, $2.36
part #18 guide rail, $14.90
Your actual part #'s my vary by your model year but I think that they should be the same. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi, Joe,
I've shared this story before; I'll do it again.
I bought my first K1100LT in 1997. When it came near 36k miles, I asked the mechanic if it was really necessary to change the timing chain tensioner rail. He said that when he went to the BMW school, the same question was asked. The instructor said that all of you students are experienced dealer mechanics. How often have you seen a problem in any K-bike with the tensioner rail. None of the mechanics had ever seen or heard of anyone having a problem. Ihe instructor said neither had he. I didn't have my rail renewed at 36k miles. I sold the bike with 122k miles on it. It now has well over 140k miles on it and the timing chain tensioner rail still has never been changed, and the bike is still running well.

| Thanks for the advice. It sounded like I had to add a Moly coating or something. I agree, if it ain't broke....and chances are it won't ....don't fix it. |

The only thing to be careful of is if you don't really know the oil change history of the bike it's possible for the oil passage in the chain tensioner to plug up and not provide the proper tension for the chain, as it uses running oil pressure to maintain tension.
If your close to being "in there" you might want to pull it out and clean it out so you know for sure that it won't be a problem in the future.
I was pretty sure that mine didn't "need" replaced, but I also wasn't "asked" if I wanted to have that stuff replaced either. _________________ Ride safe.

| Great idea...easy enough to pull and clean. Especially since it had one of those Fram filters with the black stuff on it.... |
