I'm taking the LT apart today for a survey and R&R. The forks are coming off as well for a badly needed rebuild, so the pertinent questions are:
-what's the least expensive place to get the seals?
-am I buying a kit or just two seals?
-where do I get the gaiters?
-should I experiment with oil weight for my intended results? (250lbs pilot + a 140lbs passenger and no luggage)
-what about oil level?
-would installing Progressive/Race Tech/etc springs be worth the investment?

I've rebuilt several forks before and most times I was able to get a 'formula' handed down that worked for my particular application. This one's different, so any advice is greatly welcome.
I do have a shop manual, so diss/ass is no problemo...

^^ Those don't fit the LT without some cutting of the plastic above the forks.

I took someones advise here and took a heat gun to them so they would clear the plastic part to which you are referring.
You just get the seals, parts are sold separately.
10 wt oil and yes I would upgrade the springs also along with the rear shock as long as I'm spending your money! Very Happy

Or you could get some OEM ones for R bikes - they're only like $35 EACH! Laughing

I think they were maybe a little over $20.00 per when I got them for Dr. Malacarne. When I got them for the K, they were $18.00. I hope they haven't gone up that much!

Hi,
+1 on the Rancho gaiters. I put OEM gaiters on my first K1100LT (gaiters for the /6 or /7 airheads) and they worked fine, but they are BMW parts and, as such, are PRICEY!! The Rancho gaiters work and fit fine.
