the actual wheel, if you are lucky enough you will see the front wheel start to move before the body of the car moves. It might be in my mind
but when on a four lane highway and your in the left lane comming up on a car and you can't see the driver look at his front wheel before you pass and if it move's in your lane direction you know he does not see you.
sometime's old things still works. just remember the wheel thing really only seem to work if you can not make eye contact with the driver. _________________ In the words of the stones

I wouldn't trust that approach. Someday someone will interpret it as a signal to go ahead.
And I don't trust drivers who seem to make eye contact with you. Sometimes they're looking right through you. When people are driving their brains are conditioned to look for cars, so that's what the brain is lookinig for. Sometimes a bike won't actually register even though they'r'e looking right at you. This is why you get a lot of the "I didn't even see you" stuff going on.
Have lots of lights, pretend you're invisible and keep your head in the game at all times.(Planning escape routes, expecting the unexpected, yada, yada, yada...) No guarantee even that will save you but it certainly improves your odds. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Good golly - I can't tell if you people are in the left lane, the left side of the lane or what - reads like you're all over the damn road.
If you ride on the left side of whatever lane you are in, it's easier for the driver ahead to see you in their side rear view mirror, and it's easier for the driver behind to see you because you are in front of them.
+1 on staying out of the goo in the center of the lane. _________________ Jim

Have only done a few group rides, but on each one everyone naturally fell into left, right, left, right...alternating orientation. NOBODY rode in the center of the lane.

As is the correct formation for a group ride. I have to use the words "common sense" carefully but I think it applies. _________________ Ride safe.

I have a friend who sometimes rides his BMW in the center of a lane. This raises a serious question about BMW riders. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

well I find meyself migrating to the center but as soon as I notice I'm rt back in the left center, i guess because the center is so smooth..
and the ruts are not. _________________ In the words of the stones

wtf...omg...imo...
this really is a know brainer. most M/C rider do not have the endrosment ( WVa will not issues plates unless you have insurance and the insurance company will not give a policy unless you have the endorsment !!) i remember that from the MFS class.
but think about this most of the traveling public uses a 4 wheeler that has the driver on the left side hence you can see on comming traffic. but what if you are living in a country were they drive on the funny side. what side of the road are you on now. ( think japan or ireland)
my point is this you need to be placed in the lane so that you can see oncomming traffic and that the driver to rear can see your tail...light. _________________ fix the problem not the blame ; fix what is messed up ; NO one is to blame. |

My favorite HD rider moment ever...
I had found a 96 KLR 650 for sale in VA through Yahoo, so on Labor Day weekend, my wife and I (and the dog) drove down from CT and stayed overnight on the edge of DC, so we could make a quick drive over to the seller's house in the morning, pick up the bike, and get a good early start on a nice backroad ride home, with a stop in West VA for a round of disc golf.
As we pulled in to the hotel parking lot we spotted a bunch of hogs, a couple on trailers, mostly full-dress touring machines. Dynas? Anyway....
The next morning as we're heading out, a bunch of people were out gearing up to take off on them, getting into "full dress" themselves. I started talking to a woman in her jeans, leathers and stars-n-stripes bandanna about what a great day it was for riding.
"Yes, it's perfect do you ride?"
"Yes, I'm down here from CT to pick up a bike and ride it home this afternoon."
"Oh, are you getting a Harley?"
"No, it's a dual-sport bike that I can tour on, and take pretty much anywhere."
"OH, you should get yourself a HARLEY! They're so nice, and they come with a whole wardrobe and lifestyle!"
Now, I know it sounds like I'm paraphrasing, but I'm not. Those were this woman's exact words. Not only does the motorcycle help you define who you are, it comes with a whole set of CLOTHES! Like BARBIE!
How could I pass up all that for a lightweight, single-cylinder go-everywhere-do-everything machine that got 60mpg?
We pulled away as her husband was backing the bike off the trailer....
I put 1k on that bike in the next 3 days, and still believe it was as close as I've yet gotten to my perfect bike. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

I've seen gals on sportbikes that might say the same thing and no matter what crowd it comes from it's sad.
But hey, if that's what it takes for dad to get mom interested in letting him ride... a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!
Just let it be known, not all harley riders are that way. And even some of those that are that way are decent people in spite of that lapse in judgement... _________________ M N B
