http://desmoparts.com/bmw/k1100lt/k1100lt.htm

Desmoparts sells a stainless fastener kit for specifc bikes. This is what they say about the K1100LT kit:

Replace fasteners on the following components: all fairings hardware, brake & clutch reservoir covers, front fender, fuel cap, rear rack, handlebar mount, side rails, rear seat mounts, nosecone, license plate kit, and windscreen.

I'm going to try this. To me it's worth it just to have all the potentially missing fasteners available the first time I do any serious disassembly.
Anyone else tried them?

I did my own. Took one of each bolt and went to a local place(Tacoma Screw Products) to get the HW. They're good because all I had to do was give them one of each and they found the stainless ones for me - no searching through bins/drawers at a HW store.

It cost about $20-25 per bike and I did the peg plate bolts too.

I've seen Jim's bike which was Desmo's protrtype and it looks good too.

Did my RS a couple of years ago with the Desmo kit, nice kit, very extensive, wound up with several extra of many types of fasteners which has come in handy for spares.

Nice winter project and let's you get to know your bike intimately.

"It is a common misconception that stainless steel is stronger than regular steel. In fact, due to the low carbon content, stainless steel can not be hardened. Therefore when compared with regular steel it is slightly stronger than an un-hardened (grade 2) steel fastener but significantly weaker than hardened steel fasteners."

http://www.boltdepot.com/Fastener-Information/Materials-and-Grades/Materials.aspx

Anything critical on a BMW needing harder than grade 2 bolts?

Reminds me of the movie The Dirty Dozen.
Pinkley: Very pretty, General. Very pretty. But, can they fight?

I can recommend the SS fastener kit from Desmoparts. It really adds just enough bling without going too far.
In fact that was my K1100RS on his website, he used as a model to put the kit together.
Like Mike Toon mentioned, suspension or brake part bolts are not replaced with SS as they are not as strong as hardened steel bolts.

Just installed the kit I got from OTG.
Looks good, but you just as well buy a full metric allen wrench set to carry in the bung because most of the fasteners use sizes not included in the tool kit.
Over all it's a good kit. Could use some changes though.
Missed the 4 bolts that fasten the lower luggage racks to the foot peg plates.
Could use a little longer machine screws for the inside upper dash panel.
The flat head screws for the front bake mc cover could be just a shade smaller diameter on the flats so they recess down into the cover like the original screws.

Scott, if you think you're missing something, let Chris know what it is. Chris is a cool guy - if there's something missing from the kit, he'll send it to you. If there is something that isn't in the LT kit, he'll add it.

I thought the bolts for the luggage racks were in the kit.

Chris usually keeps a bike for a week or so to put a kit together. When he made up the K11LT kit, he did it in a day - and he had all kinds of interruptions...

I was going to send him an email (just for information for him) but I wasn't expecting anything as I bought the kit 2nd hand.

There were screws for the rest of the luggage rack assembly, just not where they attatch at the bottom behind the rear foot pegs (when folded).

I used up part of the kit when repairing my fairing bracket. I was glad I had it for that but found the directions a little confusing. I'll reserve judgment until I go back and try to use up the rest of the kit.

Snow's mostly gone, have to take a new avatar pic.

Scott just FYI that kit was not cracked or molested in any way.

I didn't know this before but Desmo also sells single bits of stainless hardware so you can build your own kit or get individual bits you need/want. Very convenient because a lot of places make you buy stuff in lots of 10 or 25.

Good morning all...

Hey just a quickie while we're talking fasteners... does anyone know the 'thread pitch' of the 8mm fasteners that hold the transmission housing to the clutch ?? I could just go out to the barn, remove one and measure, but its only 9 degF out there at the moment and it seems easer to ask ! I want to make the 4 removal guide pins from hardened "unthreaded bolt blanks" and will thread them myself...

Thanks in advance if anyone knows... if not, I'll brave the cold later when it warms up some...

Regards..................// Ernie-NH

Hi, Ernie,
I just braved the cold (60 degrees) of my garage and put a gauge on my threaded rod - what I use for guide pins. Mine is 8mmx1.25. I hope this helps. Now I can ride to the store to buy some Stabil for the now-sold K75RT which will be dormant for the next 6 months in Michigan before it moves to Alaska!

I did the kit on both bikes. Really nice quality. Like others have said, there is some extras in the kit (which makes you wonder what you missed). My first kit was missing one bolt, and Chris sent it right out (plus a spare).

The lower fairing screws for the RS are beautiful, I used loctite, just to make sure they did not go anywhere.

I only did the lower fairing screws.

Almost jewel-like.

My biggest problem is that I would like to do Dzus fittings there. But that would mean removing the Desmo screws- those things are just too nice to replace.....

So if you ever put your bike into a concours judging, would this kit be counted as an unacceptable modification or an improvement which it undoubtedly is, but wold you get marked down as being unoriginal?

Phil - if you can find Startron, it's better than Stabil. If you have ethanolated gas there, you want blue Stabil.
