I finaly replaced my wal-mart batt with a BMW copy. The fuel pump noise went away completly. Son-of-a-gun who would have thought that..
I replaced the batt because of my abs lights flashing. The abs resets and works great until you turn it off and restart and then damn lights start flashing again. Bastards..looks like black tape for me again. But on a positive side atleast the f&*cking fuel pump noise stopped. _________________ In the words of the stones

In case you didn't know, the ABS lights are supposed to flash until you start moving. The brain needs to go through it's self-test - and part of that is testing the sensors which can't be done when stopped. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Didn't have the fuel pump noise, but had the $!@*^%#$$ ABS lights. Used the black tape routine for a couple of weeks. Then one day I noticed (looking around the side of the black tape) that the flashing, disco light show was over. My thought was that once the battery is at the proper voltage and stays there- the computer needs to go through a bunch of start/stop cycles then resets the ABS. Either that or the bike has become "aware" and is now self-healing.

A slightly weak battery will fail to init the ABS system properly. The lights will flash and the flashing will not stop once you start moving.
Temporary Solution: Start the bike. Let it warm up for a minute or so. Stop the engine. Turn the ignition off at the key. Back on. Restart the bike. The lights should flash normally (together not alternately) and stop once you start moving (after about 10').
You will experience this problem more often in the winter as batteries hold less of a charge when it's colder outside. My current battery started doing it a couple months ago, but now that it's warmer here in California, it's happy as a clam. I know from this behavior that the battery is still usable, but not quite as healthy as it used to be. I expect it'll be a tad more trouble next winter. You are MUCH less likely to experience this if you keep your bike on a battery tender. I have one. I always forget to use it. _________________ M N B

oh yeah no doubt. But mine still flash all the way to work.
the only time they stop flashing is when i reset the abs. they stop flashing until I shut the bike off, then when I restart the bike the lights flash again.
bummer but will fix it oneday. _________________ In the words of the stones

I had a chat to a BMW mechanic in Guildford recently and he told me that if the battery drops below 11.7V then the computer takes the resources away from non-essential systems (ie ABS) and diverts them to more important area like keeping the engine going. So that is why your ABS lights flash when you have a poor battery.
I use an 'Optimate' clone purchased from my local auto-mart to keep my battery topped up when i am not riding it, and I dont get the flashy ABS light thing after about 10 secs of running when the compy finishes its self test cycle. _________________ 1984 CX650 Turbo 48k miles

I wonder if he's ever looked at a wiring diagram. I have the BMW wiring diagrams that show all of the inputs and outputs for the Motronic and that's simply not possible. I suppose it could be true for other bikes but it is not for K1100s.
The ABS control unit is just more sensitive to lower voltages. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Actually the ABS system can fault due to low voltage while riding, even after it's initialized successfully. When I upgraded to higher wattage aux. lights on my LT, it took about an afternoon of running errands until it happened. The ABS went into fault mode while riding when the battery got drained low enough. I turned off the aux lights and restarted while riding and the ABS came back to life.
(This is what convinced me to do the alternator upgrade.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck in reference to your last post, if I added the Catz lights to my '93 with the smaller alternator, would I have the issues you mentioned? I don't have heated grips or run heated clothing (yet).
I am concerned about the output being able to handle those lights and properly charge the battery as well. _________________ Steve

Yes, I think you would have issues. I had issues going from a pair of 35W lights to 55W lights. I don' thin I was running my heated grips that day.
The CATZ XLO lights are 70W each so I suspect that would overtax the alternator.
The alternator upgrade is pretty easy though. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
