Hi guys, just new to the K1100 crew (UK Model) and loving it. Don't know much about the bike accept that the ABS light doesn't come on at all and the system doesn't appear to function. Brake fluid changed and system bled as per the blogs on this forum.
Don't really mind the non function but the bike has failed its MOT due to the "its fitted, therefore it has to work" rule. |

Welcome to the group! I'm a relative newcomer as well, logged my 1000nth mile last week with snow still all around. Here's the thing: My ABS seems to be fine in terms of the lights and all but I have yet to ever feel it activate in a hard stop. If you have to make a hard stop on bad traction to activate it, I don't think I'm willing to test that out.
OTG will be along shortly demanding pictures. _________________ Jim

Mad Max. COOL- just what this group needs. WELCOME!
You should see the ABS blinking lights once the engine had started.
I ask this of all "Newbees"- have you checked the fuses?
If those are all O.K. there are others on this website with much more knowledge and they will likely chime in soon.
Good luck and again, welcome.

I hope we don't start a thread about people wrecking trying to test their ABS. I'm going to trust the lights. I don't mind hearing my truck's brakes chattering once in a while but that's usually on snow and ice. It's pretty easy to keep it upright.
While we're on the subject of what I don't get about ABS, does anyone know why the ABS won't click in with the bike running in 1st gear on the centerstand? _________________ Jim

Jim,
Because the front wheel needs to be turning too?
Just a guess.

The ABS will not initialize properly until it has tested all 5 five of it's main components: the control unit, both modulators and both sensors. The sensors cannot be tested until the bike is moving and the control unit senses them sending pulses at expected rates.
If you're riding on a flat level surface then the risk of putting your bike down by testing the ABS is incredibly small. In fact, that's the whole point of having ABS in the first place. IMO it's a good idea to go out and test your front and rear ABS (empty parking lot or deserted road with no cars around) so you know what to expect when it engages in a real life situation.
Edit: I meant test your ABS if you're sure it's working. I wouldn't suggest locking up a front wheel if you think your ABS isn't working. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Cheers guys, will check the fuses, didn't even think of that. When something fails you always think the worst.
Thanks everyone for the welcome, will let you know how i get on. |

Jim or FD, I think you should rename this thread "New Member with ABS questions". Max is not receiving the customary welcome. _________________ Jim

Welcome Max! The ABS function always seems to be an issue with recently acquired bikes. It was with mine, a reset and new battery by the dealer cured that.
Curious, how do you know it's not working, or how did the inspectors know? When you start up, the ABS lights will blink until you're under way for a few feet and then should turn off. Are yours staying on, flashing that is? (whoops, just reread your post about no lights what so ever).
A less than prime battery is always a suspect in ABS related issues, it's needs peak juice to function prorperly.
Also the fuses as has been mentioned.
Usually it's a less serious issue that just has to be sorted out. Good luck!
Also, in 4 years and 10k miles (I know, not much) my ABS has never activated, I would like to know what it feels like.... _________________ Steve

All i know is that no ABS lights function at any time and after a few phone calls the guy at the MOT testing centre claimed that from start up the ABS lights should have went into test mode, thereby lighting up either steady or flashing. The ABS light has never functioned, either at stand still or moving. Back wheel locks up on hard braking, havnt attempted front wheell lock up.
Cheers. |

Welcome, MAD MAX
When my ABS went into fault right before a trip and I couldn't get it to the shop (before I knew the reset procedure) I went in and pulled all the bulbs that would be blinking/driving me crazy . As yours is the ABSI system with the expensive and trouble prone(IMO) ABS control unit, I suspect the previous owner did just that, in lieu of replacing a bad ABS brain box. If there are no blinking light at all at startup, someone may have simply pulled the blinking bulbs... |

You might get lucky ad the bulb is either out or just a bad buld.
If the bulb is good and your fuse is good, then check and clean all conections as you do that make sure each conection has power to it.
You have to ask one of the other guys if a test light is ok to use or if a ohm/volt meter would be better.
I hope this helps. _________________ In the words of the stones

Tested front and rear today and glad I did. Low speed paved road no traffic hit the rear hard enough to activate ABS. Got brave from that and squeezed the front hard. Both disengaged briefly once and reengaged. You're right, if you have it you should try it in a controlled situation. You don't want the first time you experience it to be in a dangerous situation. _________________ Jim

Hi guys, i run the diognostic check i found in your fantastic tech. section, came up saying it was code 6, Large blue ABS Relay in the relay box(Not the smaller blue ABS warning relay). Any ideas on sorting it? I presume i'll need a new relay, any ideas on cost?
Any info would be much appreciated, cheers. Mark |

Hi guys, sorry havnt been replying, working abroad/illness, found the fault on ABS. While in the dealers for a check up,they looked up their records and found the bike had been in for diognostics test and a faulty brain was discovered and the ABS bulb had been removed. It seems strange to me that even a dealers computer can't get past the first fault code to diagnose other faults. Happy enough with no ABS but would be nice to check for other problems.
Cheers guys for all your help!

hey Max - other "dead" ABS units have been revived by various means. There's a guy in Japan who repairs ABS I brains. The dealers don't know all the tricks... _________________ Jim
