I'm thinking of removing the side and centerstand to free up a grease fitting and clean up and paint. I think I want to support the bike with an overhead chainfalls while doing this. What is the best lift point? I would leave the wheels touching, just take the weight off to keep it upright.
Also, just 4 allen head cap screws to remove? _________________ Jim

Jim, just use the engine.

Jim,
Alternatively you could use 2 MC tie-down straps (or small rachet-type straps- just don't get too carried away with the rachet).
Use a piece of lumber (2x6 or so) on the ground perpendicular to the bike with the front wheel on it and the tie-downs out at an angle. Just like you would with a MC trailer.
Although Mystic Red's method does give you a bit more ground clearance.
Good luck,

Is it stable supported on the engine without the centerstand? Which wheel comes off the ground first?
I'm a little concerned about SugarHills idea. If it managed to roll off the plank all hell would break loose quickly. _________________ Jim

I roll my bike on to the lift, clamp the front tire in tight and jack it up with a block on the oil pan. Front tries to come up first but squeezed in the tire vise the rear comes up high enough that I can put the center stand down. I would use some sort of tie down once I got it high enough to get the center stand off. Maybe a friend to help spot the bike during the lift? You could use a piece of 3/4" plywood if you don't like the 2x6 idea and a couple of eyebolts with M/C straps. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Those grease cavities are sealed until you bust 'em loose. Once you bust 'em loose, and the grease finds a way out, then you can tell you're getting grease in. _________________ Jim

So I might not need to disassemble, just try harder with the grease pump? Maybe a little heat on the pivot?
Also if the chainfalls is right there, wouldn't suspending by the steering head be the quickest way to support while the stand is off? Ijust don't want to do something stupid and have to post pictures of me pinned under a motorcycle. _________________ Jim

Jim,
The difference between what Johnny does (under the steering and through the rear wheel) and what you propose (just lifting by the steering) is center of gravity.
I believe that if you just lift as you suggest- once significant weight is taken off the front tire the bike is going to try to flop one way or the other. This is because it will be pivoting on the rear tire contact patch. Johnny has most of the bike hanging below both of his lift points.
DAMHIK.......
Good luck.
