Anybody install one of these?
http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=64&products_id=369
It is an alternative to the Audiovox unit and although it cost at least twice as much (Just over $200 vs $100 or less for the Audiovox) it doesn't need any vacuum input. It gets its input off the speed sensor.
Looks like a smaller and cleaner install.
With the possibility of a long trip I might be doing this. I know how much the CC in cars helps- won't own a vehicle without it.

You can also set up the AudioVox to get it's input from the speedo sensor. I've tried it and it works fine. I decided to just use the tach signal because that way there's one less connection to fail. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

John - if anyone has installed one, they haven't said anything about it. I mentioned the electronic cc unit a long time ago. Rostra shows it as a 250-1223 http://www.rostra.com/automotive-consumer.htm , although I see a part #250-1316 on other websites. The difference may have something to do with which control unit comes with it. Prices seem to range from $189 - $229 or so.
I was going to replace the vacuum unit with one of the electronic units - but the global economic downturn has temporarily prohibited needless upgrades . _________________ Jim

Must have been sleepy when I posted this- to correct myself- the audiovox unit uses vacuum to move the throttle open and closed. The Rostra does this without any vacuum. This eliminates the need for a PVC vacuum reservoir. _________________ John & Cathy

Rostra makes the cruise systems, among other things. There is an Audiovox electronic system - no vacuum. AFAIK, Audiovox gets them from Rostra. _________________ Jim

The Audiovox does not need a vacuum reservoir. I removed the one from my LT and never bothered on the K100RS4V or K1100RS. I just did that on the first install because that's what people did on other bikes. The K1100 doesn't need it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Guess we're talking about two different things here. This: http://www.oem-auto-accessory.com/250_1222_1.html and this: http://salestores.com/rostrapr.html which do not use a vacuum operated servo;
or this: http://www.amazon.com/Audiovox-CCS100-Universal-Vacuum-Control/dp/B00029WQTW which does use a vacuum operated servo. Although both are electronic, one uses a vacuum servo, the other does not. Neither needs a reserve vacuum canister. _________________ Jim

Actually when I was figuring out how to do my first install people who had put the CCS-100 on other bikes found that they needed a VRC. That's the reason I did it and then experimented with removing it when I needed to mount a radar detector in the place where I had the VRC.
I've heard rumors that AudioVox was going to make an electric one but I checked their site and don't see one yet. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Murph is a very, very trustworthy guy well-known in the Concours crowd. I personally would trust pretty much anything he sells. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

Hi, All,
If anyone wants to install a Vista-Cruise onto a K1100, I have one, new. I was ready to install one and then I hit the deer. I'm now riding K75's which have the throttle housing drilled and tapped for the "Joan Claybrook Memorial Screw".

I installed one several years ago. It was not a good choice. It never did function very well. The size of the unit was just about the same size as the audiovox.
At the time i didn't think the k1100 engine would produce enough vacuum, I was wrong
I have since (one year ago) installed the audiovox, and am deleriously happy with it.
I would highly recommend the audiovox (you can't go wrong). |
