|
|
I am still getting the alternating ABS lights on initial power on. I think that the ABS computer is messed up. Question is, if I take it to a dealer, and he tells me it is the main ABS computer, is this part repairable?
Has anyone had any luck getting them fixed, or are they a replace only. It appears to be a pricey part....couple pieces of electrical tape may be in order.
I have read some posts that there is a guy who repairs ABS1 systems....anyone have any experience with ABSII?
Thanks,

There's a dude in Japan who does the ABS I repair (or at least claims he can) but I've never heard of ABS II being repaired. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if there is a difference between the FTE and the FAG parts. It appears that there is two different units. Are they interchangeable?
Is this worth a trip to the dealer? or am I throwing away money, that I should save for a new unit? _________________ 1994 K1100RS

FTE or FAG? Huh?
If your question is ABS I vs. ABS II, then no the two are not interchangeable.
On the dealer thing, hard to say. I'd call and talk to the service manager to see if he knows anything about old Ks like ours. A dealer reset MIGHT work but I can't say for sure. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Have you managed to get a blink code out the system yet. You may have a fault at one of the sensors. If you have moved the main loom plug into the brain recently check that it has been refitted properly, it's possible to refit the plug and bend one of the pins if you're not careful. I know as i speak fron experience. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

I have noticed that the ABS pumps (ABS II) are manufactured by two manufacturers FAG and FTE (at least that is the molding on the side) I do not know if they are compatible, or have the same BMW part numbers.

I will remove the large plug and check the pins tonight. No, I have not been able to get it to reset.... _________________ 1994 K1100RS

Joe,
I have posted this elsewhere on the forum.
I had the dreaded ABS light show for a while and could not get it to reset. Until I could get to someone to do further diagnostics I did the black tape cover-up.
After a couple of weeks I happened to look at the gauges from an angle and noticed that the system had reset itself- lights were no longer blinking. Something about a certain number of run/stop cycles.
or a sadistic electrical engineer that designed the system laughing his ass off. _________________ John & Cathy

Thanks for the info. I am heading for the black tape route. Can the bulbs be pulled and the system still work in the background?
Thanks,

Yes, but if it does come back to life you will never know if you don't have the bulbs in.
Without the bulbs, I suppose you could test it by locking up the rear. (Provided you feel comfortable doing that and can keep the bike straight up enough so as to not cause a highside when you let off the brakes.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'll try the tape.....it does go against my sense of perfection, and ride it for a while. If it does not reset....Drakes LED's and out with the bulbs!
Thanks guys! _________________ 1994 K1100RS

Joe,
Do the code readout again with the 12V LED. Connect the test LED (+lead to Battery + and -lead to Pin#2)
You are looking for negative pulses and each one will light the LED. You might find you have a code 7 which would be a defective Hydro unit or the controller card is bad.
I would first read the codes, confirm you have an 8 and then disconnect and measure both sensors. You should have somewhere around 135 Ohms. Wiggle the cable with your meter attached to see if one of them is broken internally.
Sorry Scott,
I've been off playing in CA for a month and haven't been keeping up.

I did the tape thing for 6 months and then got a new batt. and took a shim out of the front sencer.. ok forgot to put all of them back in left one out by mistake and cleared my ABS unit and all is good. put the shim back in and it faulted. so I took it back out and no problems so far. My ABS ring is a little rusty so I guess It need to be closer than normal.
My problem may not have anything to do with yours so good luck _________________ In the words of the stones

OK rode today with tape on the instruments....Hate it already... I re-checked the flash codes, and is an "8" I will unplug the sensors (probably not tonight) and check their resistance (is it futile?) Along with some good wiggling. I can't remember is the front sensor plug up under the tank??
Thanks,

Thanks Drake.....figures.
At the 2000 ohm setting on my meter, I get 295 for the rear (easy to get to) sensor.
Am I out of range?
