I have a write up I did after completing mine. I won't say it's perfect but it got the job done. It's text only with my personal observations.
PM me if you wish to see it. _________________ Rod Kilduff

Sorry I did not do the picture/write-up when I did mine a couple of months ago. But it was my first time and while this seems like "of course" advice- I just started at the back and worked my way forward. A few observations:
-you will need something (substantial sawhorse or overhead hoist) to hold the back end up since the centerstand is bolted to the transmission. I started by removing the rear wheel and fender plus the exhaust. Then lifted the rear frame onto a steel sawhorse crossways
Sorry about the flash lighting up the license plate.
Then it was just working forward- detaching wires and labeling most of them. Battery, both brains and other "stuff" in that area. The alternator has to come off but the starter does not. The foot peg mounts are easy- the left one just unbolts, the right has the rear braking system attached (ABS-I was easy) just swing it up onto the seat area.
Support the swingarm and the trans and undo the bolts to the engine. Have someone steady the front of the bike NOW! (lesson learned) when you unbolt and muscle the trans back away from the bell housing.
Others will add their experiences- but this is not as difficult as I thought (and now you think) it would (will) be.
LAST BIT OF ADVICE- as you reassemble, make sure you re-attach all the electrical connections- ESPECIALLY the ground connections. And make sure that they are TIGHT!! DAMHIK (well, most of you do know....) _________________ John & Cathy

Thank you for the pictures and advice, I would not have thought of having someone steady the bike it would have fell on me for sure.
What kind of slpine lube did you or anyone use? _________________ In the words of the stones

I think the most common answer would be Honda Moly60. Available from most any larger Honda mc dealership, or even internet order. _________________ Ride safe.

What he said. Be sure to apply it to the trans input shaft only, NOT to the female splines of the clutch disc. On the input shaft it is recommended that the lube coat the "valleys" but not fill them completely.
This comes from Paul Glaves- The BMWMOA dean of K bike maintenance.
Also, when reassembling- make sure that the shaft goes in STRAIGHT until the trans mates with the bell housing (to avoid friction plate damage, I suppose) _________________ John & Cathy

Hi,
Most of us use Honda 60 Moly Paste, but Paul Glaves and others question whether it is sticky enough to stay on the splines. Paul uses his own mixture of 50% Honda 60 Moly Paste and 50% Wurth 3000 grease. I bought a small container of this mix from Matt Parkhouse at the Sipapu rally last weekend. I haven't used it yet. I will on my next spline lube - either clutch or final drive. _________________ Ride Safe,

Yeah, probably the best lube combo- if you are going to keep the bike long term. _________________ John & Cathy

Based on this that's what I have started using. To call that 3000 stuff sticky is an understatement. The first time I used it I mixed it with the Honda 60 in my hand. Never again. It took me FOREVER to clean it off of my hands. Next time I'll use a paper cup or something to mix it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

When are we supposed to do a spine lube? It is by the clutch, is it something that we should wait for the clutch to go?
Sorry, I have a 97 LT and I have redone the rotors (the little things between hub and rotor, not the rotors replaced, and tires, and brakes and oil changes, oh and repaired a radiator....in 25,000 miles....oh of course there are only 116,000 miles on the bike, so maybe that is why it doesn't break? _________________ Ken in Denver |

BMW recommends a spline lube every 40,000 miles. However, if your downshifting is becoming sticky then that's usually a sign that the splines are getting dry so a spline lube would be in order. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

When you re-assemble it make sure you dont mix up the connectors for the fuel tank and the gear selector switch, they are the same plug and if you do the switch is TOAST as soon as the ignition is turned on, I did it and had to strip the FD/swinging arm back off to replace it.
When putting the gearbox back on I use 2 pieces of M8 stud about 100 mm long in the bottom 2 bolt holes, it helps to line the shaft up and takes some of the weight of the box making it easier to install and saves bending the clutch actuating rod, while you have it apart check the bearings on the clutch arm at the back of the box, they do seize up and easier to do if you have it apart.
Good luck with the work and let us know how you get on.

Hi, Ken,
As Drake (Flying Duck) said, BMW recommends spline lubes at 40k miles. That said, I had a '96 K1100LT. At 32k miles, I had a spline lube done. The mechanic asked me why, and I told him because of the mileage. My shifting was no better (or worse) than befor, and it had not given me problems downshifting. I had the dealer work on it once more, to adjust the valves (needed one) at 84k miles. No spline lube! At 124k I sold the bike. I saw it again a couple of weeks ago. In fact, I checked the valve clearances. It has 146k miles. It does not yet need another valve adjusted (although one is at the tight limit) and it has not had another spline lube. It is still running fine. BTW, it still has its original timing chain guide rail, too. That's the thing BMW says to replace at 36k miles! _________________ Ride Safe,

So did I, I also used a trolley jack under the gear box to take the weight whilst removing & replacing. I didn't however, use the trestle at the back. Instead I bolted a yard of 3" x 2" to the floor with J hooks at the ends. The front Tyre (tire) rested against the wood & a ratchet strap through the bottom yoke to each J hook. The bike was supported with a jack under the sump (oil pan). I figured the trestle would be a PITA in my narrow garage. _________________ Regards Tim,

I jsut sit down behind the bike and pull the tranny off/push it on. It weighs less than 35 pounds. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I used my rolling floor jack as well under the tranny, only cause I didn't remove the swing arm and final drive. Took it all off in 1 piece.
I didn't have a sawhorse under the rear of the bike but I hung it from the garage rafters instead. Not that I would do it that way again, it wasn't the most stable, but it worked.
I have my table lift now so it'll be a lot safer/easier the next time. _________________ Ride safe.

Phil,
You've saved me a lot of $$$ over the years. I gotta get to one of the group meets and bring you some good brew....
I had a spline lube done at 31K (oil leak killed the clutch) and will simply not worry about another one......
Thanks!

Hi, Sanjiv,
That may just have been my bike. I would be the first one to do a spline lube if my bike were difficult to downshift without blipping the throttle. My '96 K1100LT downshifted fine up until the day I sold it. If your bike becomes recalcitrant to downshift, I would not hesitate to recommend you do a spline lube. That is NOT recommending it be done every 40k miles, though!
I'll take you up on the beer - some day. I have family in the San Francisco area (sister in SF and cousins in Richmond) and have been known to ride out to visit them. I'll let you know the next time I go. Maybe we can meet along the way. (coffee while I'm riding, beer after I've stopped for the night) _________________ Ride Safe,
