| My starter runs constantly. I have to disconnect the battery to stop it. The switch is not at fault. Is it the solenoid? Where is it? |

Hi,
You tried to start the bike with a low battery and the starter relay welded its points. You can sometimes separate the points by hitting the relay. If you can't, remove the relay and replace it (not cheap) or take the cover off and file the points so they are again smooth. Replace the cover and the relay. MAKE SURE the battery is fully charged. You may need a new battery; it certainly wasn't fully charged when the points welded together.
The relay is in the relay box, just ahead of the battery. I'm sorry, but I don't remember which relay is the starter relay. _________________ Ride Safe,

Phil is correct. The relay with the biggest wires is the starter relay. _________________ 2004 R1150RT 186,800 miles

Right rear corner. Medium sized black relay. Has 8mm bolts on the ring terminal leads.

That's good for the location advice. I also have a occasional sticking relay and the bike has had a new Yuasa "big" battery fitted since just before I bought it. It didn't stick for a while but now does occasionally. I stick a heavy handled screwdriver in the pannier and have given the back of the relay box a sharp tap to release it.
That way you don't have to lift the tank and can just lift the seat to access.
It happens on other bikes as well.

I'd suggest a new relay at that rate of occurance.
Some have taken the relay apart and dressed the contacts, but that's only a temporary fix as the goodie has already gone once they welded the first time. _________________ Ride safe.

PS Changed the relay for a spare I had. Thanks for the location advice.
Seems OK even though I have been using my GS more now the g/box has been fixed!
