It depends. Normal dirt roads or gravel aren't bad. This road was quite different. It was very fine silt mostly. Anytime I tried to use the brakes the ABS would sense lockup and let go.
I knew that ABS would be an issue but it was something else. When I first got on the offroad I tested because I thought ABS might be an issue. It WAS. Any time I applied either brake the ABS would sense lockup so the bike essentially had no brakes due to the ABS.
I rode it until I came to that hill in the picture. It was just past a Y so I decided to stop and roll back down to the intersection. Obviously I had to use some front brake to control the bike's speed backing down the hill.. I started backing up and the front brake wouldn't hold due to the ABS. So I turned the bike off ot kill the ABS and I then I could actually slow it down and stop it.
I'm sure I could make it up a hill like that but if I had to come down something like that I'd have to do it with no brakes so at the point in the ride I decided to do the smart thing and turn around.
This was weird. I've ridden dirt and gravel before and you can manage the brakes on stuff like that but never where the road wouldn't let you brake at all. I had to just ride it mellow and use the engine to brake.
This has inspired to to find a way to turn the ABS off temporarily. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

don't get me wrong, i love my brick and just like my 328i, i can't imagine getting rid of it for something else ... but that kind of road is what makes me want a gs adventure/ktm/vstrom/etc.
however, if you do find a way to temporarily disable the abs (possibly a switch that interrupts the hot lead to the brain on it?) that would be a sweet mod. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

I may be wrong, but doesn't the r/h switch on the handlebar cover turn off the ABS temporarily? Seems to do this on my RS although I have never tried it for real. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

No that's used for resets and getting the lights to stop flashing if the control unit has a fault.
On the GS R bikes you can turn the ABS off but not on Ks. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Damn - thats a shame. Would like to see a K in a rear wheel slide down a sand dune I have not tried that on the GS yet! _________________ 1980 CB900FA
