|
|
I am slightly, no quite, worried about the rear drive on my 1998 K1100LT and I have a question.
Firstly, how much play if any, should there be in the Rear Drive Housing in relationship to the Rear Wheel Fork?
I hadn’t noticed this before, and it only came to light whilst cleaning the bike, but I can move the rear wheel from side to side by 4 – 5 mm.
I know there must be play, but is this excessive?
Secondly, should the Rear Drive Housing get hot? I can touch the housing, but it seems rather hot to me.
Thanks in advance for any help given. _________________ "Lovely stuff" ...Not my words Michael... the words of Shakin' Stevens. |

No side to side. Shouldn't get "hot" either. Put it on the center stand and check the shock attachments first. How many miles on the bike? Seems rather a new model to have final drive issues. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Thanks, will do.
71,000 miles on the bike.
The bike is in quite good nick ..... so, any ideas what this problem is?
Is this a common fault on any BMW's? _________________ "Lovely stuff" ...Not my words Michael... the words of Shakin' Stevens. |

I just ran up to the shop and grabbed a caliper to familiarize myself with 5mm. That's not much movement and is probably normal. Will not hurt to torque the shock nut's and bolts anyway as that's what holds you off the rear wheel. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

You can get rear play in the bevel pivot bearings. That wll allow some movement and 5mm is a sign to replace them. This is not to do with the bevel itself so check this out as its the common cause of play and they can need changing approx every 40k miles or so.
The bevel case will get warm to hot after a run. Just like the gearbox it has moving parts and friction. |

Had a really good look at this problem last night.
It transpires the LH Pivot Pin had worked loose.
Torqued it up fully and all the sideways movement has disappeared.
God knows how this pin worked loose but rather worrying.
Only downside is the back tyre, (Metzler Lasertec), is shot after 2200 miles.
Thanks for all the input. _________________ "Lovely stuff" ...Not my words Michael... the words of Shakin' Stevens. |

Should have had a locking compound on it. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT
