Howdy folks, just to introduce myself, just bought a K1100RS 1997 with 37000klm on it (about 25,000 miles I guess), been reading this forum for a few weeks to find out all I have to know about buying it. I tried to register but it was asking me for the 3 letter code on the roundel on the side of the bike so at that stage I gave up, as I'm really stoopid Shocked Shocked

Anyway whilst driving home in the traffic this afternoon it suddenly clicked, they mean "BMW" you dumba%^e!!! Talk about thick.

Anyway I live in subtropical Brisbane, more closely a place called Samford which is just at the bottom of what we call hills (650mts is the highest!) with some close by twisties. So for those of you whining about snow and winterising, spare a thought for us, it's a horrible 80 - 90 degrees here, and annoyingly sunny all the time......

Been riding since '78 on Laverda 750s then a break for 20 years after a bad accident, then back on a K100 RT for 5 years then this one.

Definitely enjoy the banter and tech help especially. I'll be doing it's spline lube when it gets to 40K ish apart from that it's immaculate, although the right decal is torn.

The only thing that actually needs fixing is the wildly fluctuating fuel guage, the census seems to be replace it with a VDO or check the wiring, I might play with some caps on the guage to add some electrical damping. Will report back when it's fixed.

I will tend to contribute to the electronic questions as I'm an electronics engineer.

So greetings all and we should get a get together going for the Aussies here, I see there's a few in Melbourne and the Gold Coast, how about the aussies (and anyone else of course) reply here with what rallies they are intending to attend this/next year so we can get drunk together.

Cheers

Derek

I've heard this is a consequence of living in the sub-tropics Very Happy

Anyway, welcome from a crow eater, and how much did you pay for the brick?

Just recently bought a 96 K1100 LT for $5K, but there'll be a story here later on that!!

Derek,

WELCOME to the nuthouse.

Don't worry about that 3 letter code thing- you are NOT the first person temporarily stumped by it. Laughing

NICE looking bike you got there. Best of luck.

John

Welcome.

You may have gotten stumped by the roundel thing (you're not the first and won't be the lest) but that's an excellent nOOb post. You even included some nice pics and filled out your signature. Very Happy

BTW: What oil do you use? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Alternate spelling of newbie, as in new to the site.

In Australia I stick to VB (Victoria Bitter) but I spend a lot of time in Asia for work, so in India it's the ole Kingfisher and of course Tiger in Singapore. China has an awesomely cheap drop Tsing Tao. It tastes almost the same as VB but quarter the price, or did you mean the bike? Dunno.....

There's an awesome T-Shirt you can get over here which says "The liver is evil, it must be punished"....
Laughing Laughing

BTW if you want to retire somewhere that is a cheap place to stay permanently drunk, head to the Phillipines, locally made San Migual, cheaper than water!!

Thanks for your comments folks Smile

edit:

> Anyway, welcome from a crow eater, and how much did you pay for the brick?

Probably too much!! But it is seriously imaculate! The PO even polished the air cleaner and other stuff under the seat. And no it wasn't because he was selling it, I suspect he is just a perfectionist. His other bike is a early 80s R100 which also looks like it was made yesterday!

Adelaide huh! Trouble with there is all the wineries, McLaren Vale is one of my favourite places, Chapel Hill Winery, yum yum, trouble is you need a chauffeur....

I noticed he also polished the exhaust collector. Those look like chit from the factory.

Draw yourself a pint and stay awhile.

Beautiful bike, complete with a BFD.

BFD? I thought I knew all the TLA's but not this one!!

Shocked

The Lavs in bits but it would look like a red version of this if it wasn't.....sigh.

http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Laverda/laverda_750sf3%2076.htm

The motors on these are indestructible, mine's just waiting on some time and loving. Kids will be grown up soon, then it'll be higher up the list!

Speaking of which, it's Saturday morning here, sports taxi time!!! Cricket, netball and tomorrow sailing! 300kms every weekend ferrying kids around Smile Luv it Smile

Hi, Derek,
You wrote, "sail-ing (sâ'ling) 1. the fine art of getting wet and becoming nauseous while slowly going nowhere at great expense." I might add to this: boat 1. a hole in the water into which you pour copious amounts of money.

Welcome Derek,

I see you bought Geoff's bike, it's in great condition. We will have to get together for a ride in the New Year.
