The rear ABS kicks in when braking firmly on good pavement. ( dry with no sand) This is on a 95 k1100rs with 34k miles. Has anyone had this problem?
Thanks in advance. _________________ 1995 K1100rs

are you now speaking leet-speak jo? what's up with all the 1's instead of i's?
and from my experience (and what i have heard on these forums) the abs is quite aggressive. it definitely kicks in earlier than needed for me on dry pavement too. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

Lexxol, is this happening early in the braking or as you are just about stopped??
You may want to check the sensor gap. I had this happening on my front after I had just changed the tire. I had to re-adjust the gap and it quit acting up, it's been fine since. _________________ Ride safe.

Thank you for the input. I will check the gap. I never had this early abs activation on other BMW bikes. In all fairness they were newer models. I will either fix the ABS or remove it. Thank you again for the input. _________________ 1995 K1100rs

OK, now I (using the correct letter for I) don't have the flippin' slightest idea what either of you are talking about.............
Let's make this even worse- the %#@!$#@#! weather has finally put the MC season to bed. We have several inches of white stuff on the ground here. I am really starting to hate winter. _________________ John & Cathy

leet-speak -- the stuff little kids type on the internet to sound cool. used primarily in games to make "cool" names. it involves the 1 = i, 4 = a, 3 = e, etc. _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

I hear ABS II is more prone to early activation than ABS I.
I had a 94 RS but it got crashed out before I could fully experence this.
I can say with full certainty that the ABS I can bring me to a full stop at 40MPH almost faster than I can get my foot down. I found this out when I had an inexperienced driver look right at/through me and pull out in front of me. Clutch in both brakes on HARD!!!! Good strong arms, barley got my foot down, missed the car EASY!!! Not even close!!
The Drake has experienced early activation on dry pavement at a slight hill top rise prior to a stop sign. He wrote about it in a post.
Anyways, like others say, check the sensor gap & connections. Then start with the other basics. Brake fluid clean & bled? ect.
Hope you get it worked out. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Happens just prior to stopping. Going to bleed the system and check the sensor clearance today. _________________ 1995 K1100rs

fwiw, I just finished David Hough's Proficient Motorcycling. In the book he says that you stop shorter if you brake to just before the ABS engages. I haven't measured myself yet but sure seem to be stopping quicker than when I just clamped down on the brakes. It makes sense too since ABS releases the brake little bits at a time. He suggests taking a full second to reach maximum on the front brake (but before ABS kicks in). I do have issues engaging ABS on the rear brake but if I lighten up on it when the front is at max I am fine.
