The maintenance interval for the K1100LT calls for renewing Chain Tensioner Rail Coating at 36,000 miles.
Does anyone actually do this? Has anyone a chain tensioner failure on their K1100LT? _________________ Ken Krumm

So Phil,
That wouldn't be causing the "box of rocks" noise you heard from my RS when we were sitting at that traffic light? (if you remember) _________________ John & Cathy

Hi, John,
Maybe. I rode my first K1100LT 9 years and sold it with 122k miles on it. I never changed the rail nor had a problem. I don't know anyone who has ever had a problem. I asked my dealer's master tech about it back in '97 when I bought the bike. I've written the story a number of times, but basically he said don't worry about it. Neither he nor any of his classmates at the BMW service school nor the service school instructor had ever heard of a problem. Yours could be that problem but, for me, it would be a first. _________________ Ride Safe,

Thanks. That's the word I have received over the years from my dealer. I just wanted to get other opinions. _________________ Ken Krumm

"Box of rocks" noise is from the output shaft, recently had my K apart and replaced it with a known good one (its the anti backlash gear spring that fails, it is available to replace it) I fitted new rubber dampers to it too, result is no more box of rocks

Good morning Rob in UK .....
Hope your area was not impacted too severely by the recent flooding, if so hope you have recovered !!
When you have time, could/would you elaborate on the work you did in more detail relative to the "output shaft" and the new dampers which you replaced. Did you happen to take any pictures at the time you were doing this work ?? It would be very nice to have this information as well as the exact "problem description" and photo documentation in the archives.
In addition to my '95 K1100LT, I also am an avid Airhead ( ie: 76 R100/7 ) rider. Our Airhead archives are filled with 50 years of "Problem/Resolution" information which is in part why the Airhead "cult" continues and parts suppliers continue to supply. With reference to the "K" series Bricks... I believe the enthusiasm for this design and those of us who "love" it, has already developed (K11OG) and will grow well into the future just as have the Airheads. It is for this reason that I'm asking for a more complete description of what you have done t resolve the "box of rocks" engine characteristic...
Thanks in advance for anything you can contribute.....
Very best regards and ride safe...........// Ernie-NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Hi Ernie-NH
I didn't take any pictures during the work but do still have all the old parts so can take pictures of them ( I bought a complete engine minus the head for parts) and I can give fairly detailed info on the work to stop the noise, It is a major strip-down but well worth the effort.
Will try and do the write up over the next few days and post it along with pictures for you.
Thanks for the concern about the flooding but I am well away from the area affected, our thoughts and best wishes for those that were affected.
Regards
