I fucked myself up real good. How did it happen? Well the long and the short of it that I am a fat bastard. I have no doubt that if was "normal" weight of 220-240 I wouldn't have fractured by right Tibia in 2 places. Basically I was changing after a quick, uneventful afternoon ride. The Katoom was running insanely good, the weather beautiful and I felt great.

Putting on my pants I had one in and upon putting the other leg in I tipped forward like many of us do. I then extended my right leg to catch my fall when I felt a pop, saw white, felt nauseous and wondered how I was going to support my family after surgery all at the same time. The pain was impossible to describe. It was exquisite. I had done enough ortho/broken enough bones to immediately that it was a horrific injury. I couldn't put weight on the right leg at. all. Even a tap caused agonizing pain. When still and in the right position the pain was bearable. All that from putting on a pair of Guido pants.

I waited on the floor for over an hour for Paula to get home, thinking the entire time....the loss of my riding season, having to call work, not being able to work for 3-4 months. (the resident told me when healing/rehab the limb cannot have any weight on it ) How I will pay the bills, how mad and worried Paula would be at me, how mad my boss would be at me, if I will get fired, etc etc. I also have a new crop of students starting tomorrow, meeting at 5pm. Think I can have the seminar at my hospital bed? Fuck.

Looks like the entire riding, fishing, spring/summer/fall seasons are gone. Over. I suppose it could be worse. Worse like being violated by a horse worse.

I'm scheduled for an "add on" surgery tomorrow, so that means after 4pm. I'm on morphine and percocets currently but it's only taking the edge off. In the right position it's a 5-6. When moving the pain is indescribable. Told my surgeon is a highly renowned orthopedic surgeon who also works at the hospital for special surgery.....I told them I have been an RN for 13 years so I think I am getting a little gold treatment...which I don't mind at all......

....where's that candy striper.....

Further postings as events warrant.

No, you cannot console, counsel or otherwise cuddle with my wife.
No, you cannot borrow my KTM. Might consider the FZ1 as a loaner.

The surgery will last 3-6hrs and will intail screws/rods/plates/lawn gnomes and asian girls that wink a lot. I will be out of it tomorrow. Paula will be here all day.

Fuuuuuuuuuucccckkkkkkk!!!!

Dave.
I hope you recover fast from this fracture!
And consolidated bones are stronger.
It's time for a good book!
And you have the right person for a moment like this, Paula.
Guilherme.

DAMN Dave,

I was even going to smoke a cigar with you at HM Laughing

Seriously, Cathy and I have you in our thoughts. You WILL have a perfect surgery and you WILL recover quickly and back to 100%.

Hey, what- a post with no pictures? Get some post-op pics on the forum- but will they be in Campfire, Tech (because of the hardware involved) or the Dungeon (because of language used by you and/or Paula).

Best of luck with the surgery.

John

Ahh, Dave. Seriously it may not be too late to go back and edit that post to make it something other than breaking your leg putting on your pants!! Smile Smile

I'm so sorry this happened to you and hope things go well. My wife had a horrible horse wreck a few years ago and exceeded all predictions for recovery. You can do it too.

I've been thinking about this some more.

We never get on a horse or motorcycle without putting on a helmet. We spare no expense when it comes to protective riding gear. We fasten our seatbelts without thinking about it. Protective eyewear, earwear, nosewear at work.

Now it'll be months before I can put on my pants without thinking about Dave Embarassed Embarassed

Dave, hope you don't mind my finding a little humor in your misery. I suspect I won't be the last! Best wishes.

What is it with us and limbs.

2007 I broke my foot in a 6 foot fall off of a ladder.
2009? DasBoot broke his leg on a bike.
2010 Now Dave breaks his leg.

This madness has to stop.

I feel for you Dave. Both you and Paula will be in my prayers. Any chance of a car trip to HM? Just a thougth.

Not a chance. 100% non weight bearing on the rt leg for at least 3-4 months.

Again Gwen, I don't feel good accepting good money from hardworking folks. Paula and I are truly blessed, and we are ok financially.....for now. It does not make me feel good to accept donations when so many people in the world have so little.

Thanks for the sentiments folks, they mean a lot. I'm not gonna lie, the pain is really bad. Crying or Very sad

Dave,

First of all good to hear from you. Your surgery will go well.

Gwen will wade in on this and add her thoughts- she came up with the idea.

But for now you need to concentrate on YOU. Anything that the forum members are doing is because we love ya', big guy. Take what comes your way keeping that in mind.

Once you are (literally and figuratively) back on your feet then you can "pay it forward", kind of like some of us are doing now.

There go my plans for buying either a K1300S or ZX-14 for you to take on a test ride at HM Laughing

GET WELL!!!!!
John

I know exactly how you feel Dave.

But please understand, no one is giving beyond their means.
I will fall back on a handful of great words to express myself

http://leb.net/~mira/works/prophet/prophet5.html

There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.

It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding;

All you have shall some day be given;

Therefore give now, that the season of giving may be yours and not your inheritors'.

And what desert greater shall there be than that which lies in the courage and the confidence, nay the charity, of receiving?

And you receivers - and you are all receivers - assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives.

For to be overmindful of your debt, is to doubt his generosity who has the free-hearted earth for mother, and God for father.

Oh man, unbelievable. I was really looking forward to meeting you at HM.

Stay positive, time flies, you will be up and at 'em before you know it.

Any medicinal weed available in NY? Wink

Dave,

please accept what I have sent towards any future needs, and if you don't need it - that's great, just have a JB or 3 on me.

If I can send money all round the World to folks I don't even know if they are even getting the funds [ !!! ] - a fighting fund for a downed biker brother is an excellent cause in my book - again heal quickly.

So again, we do not get to meet at HM, you will be toasted to.

On a lighter note.

Check sent.
Heal quickly (and fully).
Don't give Paula too much grief. She'll have her hands full taking care of you (more than she has her hands full just living with you)! Keep us advised on your progress.

All my best - to both of you,
