|
|
Hey guys,
I've managed to remove the housing for the gears and found the big ORANGE gear broken into 6 pieces. But I managed to put it together as best I could and it has (as best as I can count given the state it's in) 44 outer teeth and 16 inner teeth.
The gears that are still attached to the main assembly, the WHITE one has 33 outer teeth, the RED one has 22 outer teeth and the tiny GREEN one has no more teeth, but I estimate 12 teeth based on the dents.
The 4th gear was totally obliterated, I reckon it was those specks of plastic that came pouring out (2nd pic below), so there's no way for me to count the teeth on the gears.
Which of the 3 sets listed below should I go for? Have any of you bought these replacement gears before? Thanks guys!
(FYI, on my 2 small temp and petrol gauges that I fixed the glass on, it says 'Made in Portugal'. The speedometer reads in KM/H not MP/H.)

Good God, Chris, I think you've come up up with a question that hasn't been asked here yet.
Can't that outfit (who's link you gave doesn't work) tell you? If you do a VIN # search could you find out where it was made? Beats the hell outa me! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

BTW, the last letter got dropped off the URL.
Try this one, Scott -> http://www.odometergears.com/bmw.html

Hahaha! Do I get a prize?
Sorry, the last letter in the URL was missing: http://www.odometergears.com/bmw.html
They needed me to count the gears just to be sure, there are different sets for Metric gears and regular ones (this site / shop is based in the USA)

FD, I did, they're the ones who asked me to count the gears just to be sure
WOB, yeah, quite steep (it's about 300bucks my money) but a whole lot cheaper than a new instrument cluster! Everything works in it, except this...

Exactly, as Chris said a replacement cluster is way more mulah, and how does one know the gears aren't stuffed in a second hand one anyway? It's a common problem from what I have read.
I've done the replacement gear set before and it works well. The new gears are made of stronger stuff than the originals. Those sets you are looking at are cheaoer and better than the ones available here Chris!! Which I'd known about them when I needed them!!!
Hopefully there's enough bits left to count them _________________ K1100RS '97

Question: Can you spin the odometer wheels while you have it apart?
On my project Frankenbike K75 I want the odometer to start at 500,000 miles. Since it's a Fankenbike all of the parts have different miles on them so it doesn't really have a real figure for mileage and I want people to freak out if they ever look at the odometer. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the link Mystic! But yeah, Drikko's right $299USD is a LOT of dough once converted to Malaysian currency (damn exchange rate!!) and the risk of those gears being buggered is high too. Also, that cluster reads in miles, not kilometres, I need one that reads in kms.
FD, yes I can spin them with my finger, and both trip and odo 'turn' accordingly. Like you, I actually wanted to 'add' some mileage to it cos I reckon I've done 10,000kms since getting the bike, but there's no way to turn the odo alone, gotta turn the trip to move the odo...my fingers would be a bloody mess by the time I hit 10,000!
The shop selling the gears has not replied my email yet, I don't think know which gear set to send! If I buy one that's wrong, I don't think they'd take it back either. Clock's ticking, got a ride to Phuket for Bike Week in early April....aaaargh!
