So went for a ride today with some mates, they reported the following when riding behind me:-

1. Black smoke although only small when accelerating hard.
2. White smoke when the throttle was shut off after heavy acceleration, but they said it didn't smell like engine oil.
3. They couldn't keep up.....well you'd expect that, they were on a Buell 1200, and Ducati 1000DS

So the things I have done lately are:-

1. Iridium sparklers
2. Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil
3. TB sync, but I am not convinced it is right yet as the meters I was using were old and sticky. I might pull them apart and lube them.
4. All new filters, air, oil, fuel

One of the guys thought the white smoke was oil being sucked past the valve guides under vacuum in the throttles, sounds plausible, but no explanation for the black smoke.

Any ideas?

I'll get the TB sync done properly as doing a search for smoke on this forum seems to suggest this regularly and maybe some injector cleaner. There is a strong vibe between 100ks and about 108 ks but smooth mostly apart from that.

All suggestions welcome.

As I mentioned, the bike is running beautifully apart from this! In second and third gear with WOT it was lifting the front wheel off, cool!

Drikko -

1. black smoke indicates a rich mixture.
2. White smoke on the overrun ???? Usually more blue IF it's worn valve guides . stem seals. White smoke would suggest water vapour rather than oil mist?
3. Of course they couldn't !!!!!!!!!!! Twisted Evil

The obvious question is - did you have these symptoms before you did the work? Wink

Drikko,
I have seen other K-bikes blow a little black(more of a puff) under hard acceleration. Not saying that it's normal, but I have seen others do it.

I'd recommend checking the valves.

Or ride alone.

It's not easy to ride that slow though.

I don't know what it was doing before I did all the maintenance work as I never had anyone behind to tell me. The running rich thing sounds plausible. I'll take it to my friendly BM tuner to look at next week, and get them to do the TB sync properly.

As for if it's valves, I just can't fathom why they would be worn at only 39000ks, hope it's not that!

I had two valves out of spec at 22k on my LT when I had mine done. (Traded an indy guy some parts to do it as I was too lazy.)

The RS had some valves done at 25k according to the receipts that came with the bike.

Off the top of my head I think the recommend interval for checking them is every 12k although I'm of the opinion that once done the first time they are probably good for 25K check intervals.

Don't know which BM tuner you see but I can recommend Ray Peak. Lives at Canugra and does excellent work. An absolute guru with Beemers.

If you want I will get his phone number for you.

BTW, I believe that the T-shirts are on the way. I think Mike is sending them to you.

I'd go to the 4X4 show too but I'd just buy things and spend money!! Can't afford that. I did some tweaking with the TB sync last night so will go for a spin this morning. Got a BBQ to go to this afternoon which is within walking distance of home so expect some inane stupid comments from me when I get back hammered Laughing

I've heard of Ray Peake and he has done work on this bike before for the PO. So I intend to give him a call to see what he thinks tomorrow. I've got his number thanks. I've heard good things about him too.

I used to use Mobil 1 in my K100 for years and it loved it. I put it in the K11 a few months after I bought it and it used heaps of oil, so I changed to a synthetic blend and it used less oil, so I changed back to dino oil and it now uses bugger all. Others in the BM Club with K11's have experienced the same problem with full synth.

Still boning up on probs and issues for when I finally do get it.

My son Dorian is coming back to Oz and moving to Brizzy.

So I'll have to have a highway bike for the trips up to see him.

In the meanwhile the ol airhead loves gravel roads and potholes like we got down here in Northern Rivers Wink

mmmm, interesting Gary, as the M1 I used was 5w-50, which seems to be the only M1 available here. Are you saying it was the \grade or the fact that it is fully synthetic that was the issue? I see Nulon has a 15w-50 available which might be more suitable. Or should I just go back to dino!

Yer not wrong merlin, most of the SEQ roads are more suitable for GSs at the moment!

drikko - my '97 LT has almost 70,000 miles/112,000 clicks on the meter - it also smokes a bit and uses some oil. I can't use pure synth - runs right through it. I suppose the bike wasn't broken in properly.

I use a synth blend now - it seems to do all right.

As long as you're not going through too much oil, I wouldn't be concerned. I think the specs say as much as one quart in a thousand miles - which seems like a lot...

It doesn't seem to be using any oil at all that I can tell, so yep I'm not too worried about it now. I'll try a different oil ie not fully synth next oil change.

Will still take it down to Ray for a proper tune up though. It has never had one that I can tell.

I thought it was the synthetic as the blend was a 15w-50 and it was using more oil than the dino oil I use now.

Am going for a long run tomorrow so just went and checked fluid levels and sure enough the engine oil level was below the window just which confirms what the above folks said about synthetic oil being burnt! So I topped it up with Mobil 1 and noticed black gunge in the oil level window. Now this makes it easy to see what the level is but is the black gunge just left over from previous oil changes? Should I worry about it or not? Certainly not going to worry about it tomorrow!!

Full report and pictures tomorrow night, not sure where I'm going but will go randomly around the place and take some pickies.
