Any received wisdom on what might have made my clutch stiff suddenly? The clutch was replaced about 3 years (15,000 miles) ago, I can move the cable about, so it appears to be free to move.

Can the cable be oiled?

Adrian

You're not supposed to put ANYTHING in the BMW cables.

Grease it up at the lever. Make sure there aren't any hard bends in the routing of it. You can also lubricate the bearings for the pivot rod for the clutch arm.

Anything down in the area where the cable ends? Who know what kind of crap could get kicked up by a tire. Just a thought.

Check the pivot arm. When I took mine apart this winter, that little arm was pretty stiff.
I was able to clean it up and free it up and then I lubricated it when I reassembled it.

If you try and take the pin out, DON'T hammer on it. You don't want to break one of those ears off. Soak it good with some penetrating oil and just work it in/out very carefully till it comes out.

Like John mentioned, check for some road debris down there that might be binding it up.

My clutch suddenly got a little stiffy last year. Turned out to be some of the strands broke and were digging into the lining of the cable. I ordered a new cable right away and was able to limp along by adjusting the cable as it stretched and more strands broke until the new one arrived.

I used my k100 all through the winter, and my clutch arm sized, be careful what size hammer you use-i broke the tow ears that the pivot run through.
It was easier to remove the rear wheel and loosen the exhaust.

you may want a new clutch pushrod seal-mine went as soon as the clutch arm was removed.

when its off drill and tap it for a grease nipple.
