Hello all. Im new to this board here. Im looking at "cheap" bikes and the early K bikes fit into this. Ive been surfing around here gathering info, but Ill give a brief outline of how i ended up here.

Im an everyday rider, well was. I got a F650GS in early 07, then after i got info on the F800, i fell in love, and in early April 07 i traded the 650 and got an F800ST which i LOVE. been riding that for the last 3 years non stop, took a few road trips on it as well. Got up to just under 83,000 miles on it, when on easter sunday just a month ago, i crashed it.
Riding on the highway behind a car, went to make a lane change, glanced over my shoulder for a split second, turned around, when the car in front was slamming on their brakes. I grabbed mine, but didnt have enough, and slammed into them. Turns out a car had cut them off, causing them to hit the brakes. It was just a matter of bad timing all around.

Anyway, bike is totaled, i have to continue to pay on it, since at the time i was not covered on insurance.
I got really lucky and only sprained my ankle and chipped a bone in my wrist, but that was about it.

So ive been looking/saving for a used bike over the last month. Not too much money to spend, and need to get a bike asap, as that was my only transport.

I guess the real meaning for this post is to find out what to look for on a K bike that i have my eye on.
heres the link

Looks to be a 1985 K100, not sure what model specifically. He says it runs good. Price is right by me, but im curious as to what i should look for when i go to take a look at the bike.

What are things that are known to happen to these bikes through time that i can look for?

Thanks for the time and pointers.

Just recently purchased a '93 K1100RS with 25k miles myself. Here is a list of the things I've had to fix:

Replaced both tires
Rebuilt front and rear master cylinders - check for fluid leaks
Replace fork seals - started leaking at the stealership while in for tire replacement, along with the rear master cylinder
Replaced seat (comfort reasons)
Sending tank out for sealing. These tend to leak towards the back of the tank.
Greased throttle assy. - throttle was sticking a bit

So far that's it....hopefully.

Superduper - welcome to K11OG! Sorry to hear about your crash.

Unless the bike has recent tires (look for a DOT number - the last 4 digits are the week and year of manufacture - since 2000 - before that, there was a 3 digit number - the first 2 indicate the week - the last indicates the year in the decade - but there's no way to know which decade), you'll probably need new rubber.

Any of the rubber bits on a motorcycle that age are probably going to need replacing.

Unless you know the fork oil, brake fluid, and coolant have been changed recently, you'll want to change those.

I'd take a small, bright flashlight, unscrew the oil fill cap, and take a look down in there - if you see shiny metal parts - it's probably good. If you see sludge - not so good.

Good luck finding the right bike.
