Gang,

Rode the 1996 K1100LT - great ride....but found when I got home that the rear brake hose nearest the caliper is leaking. Crying or Very sad

Perused old boards and its obvious that I need all new brake lines - my are stock (14 yrs and 73K miles old) Cool

Has anyone dealt with SPIEGLER?

It looks like I need Ke S-BM0107 at $184.95 Shocked

Anything else you recommend I get besides speed bleeders? Question

Thanks,

Martin

PS Good thing brake hose began to leak BEFORE planned vacation in June.

I put Spieglers on my '95. Some of the best money spent.
Not only do they work, they even look good.
I'm not at home right now otherwise I could look and see what part # I bought for mine. I could pm you with it later if you would like.

Martin, the easiest way to do brake lines and they are cost effective, is to pull your lines and find a shop that will build them to exact specs. Most hydraulic shops will do it.

Thanks for the advice - I'll probably just order the kit from Speiglers since BMWMOA has endorsed them.

I would opt for custom made lines via hydraulic shop but I really want the bike ready to ride ASAP. Wish I'd known about this avenue and the potential problem ahead of time - could have taken this route during my clutch job Feb - March.

Live and learn

When I looked into OEM prices, it was higher than Speiglers....

I decided to replace the two front lower hoses on my bike while replacing the front pads and I had the forks out for overhaul. The local brake shop made them up to sample for me - apparently if I had needed they could have turned them out on a same day basis - and the charged me AUD$79 each, which is a shipload cheaper than other options.

Oh, and they are braided stainless steel, and what colour of clear or six other choices would Sir prefer Very Happy

It's not all that often we get stuff over here that is a lot cheaper than on your side of the world.

That's the same part # I got last year.
Looks like the $ has come down a little since then. That or I got a color option that cost a little more.
I went with Smoke/Chrome color and they were $203+S&H at that time.

It was faster than ordering them. I handed them (House of Hose) my brake lines and the guy asked if I was going to wait for them. How long? 1/2 hour. Yea, I'll wait.
Told my wife that I found a new Ho house.

Gang,

Ordered the S-BM0107 from Spiegler for &185.95 (all 5 hoses for K1100LT); with 2 speed bleeders ($14) and shipping (10.67) the total bill was $209.62.

Will let all know how it went.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,
It will go well. I put that kit on over the winter also. All the peices parts were there and of the right length. You will have to time the fittings as you install them. Not a big deal. They give you a little plastic block that you can clamp in a vise and a small plastic dowel to put in the fitting to rotate it as needed. I found the little plastic block to be a big pain in the ass. I just used a good pair of pliers and the plastic dowel.

I just got these lines for my RS. Already installed the rears, but it looks like the line from the master cylinder to the ABS line is a bit hard to get to and I might have to remove some fairing pieces to get to it.

Any here that have done this know if this is the case?

Thanks in advance.

The line from the front MC down is a real pain. It's towards the front and near the stearing head, on the right hand side of center, but I had to(or at least I did) remove the gas tank and operate like a surgeon through the wiring bundles to get to it.

Not something I want to do again anytime soon.

Scott,

I was all set to replace the brake hose from the front master to the site under the gas tank, but decided after a lot of looking that it was a real PITA do I quit. Ended up replacing all lines with Speigler but that one.''

Martin, I replaced all of the lines. That one was a slight PITA, but once the tank was off, it was a piece of cake.

I used zip ties to keep the wiring harnesses out of my way, and removing the boss that holds the ABS lines to the frame is de riguer. If you don't do this first, you're going to be cursing. Once you get them out of the way, it's easy as pie.

I actually was having more problems with the line that goes from the ABS pump to the splitter at the fender, until I pulled the assy. out from below the triple T's.

I was a little upset that the service manual states you have to compress the pistons. I did this with one side, and absolutely nothing came out of the caliper. I even bought a special tool to compress the pistons, which was a waste of money, although it does make a nice portable vise. Speed Bleeders made the job a snap.

Guys,

Apparently the K1100LT is harder than the KS because I had to remove the gas tank and fairing. After looking at the location of the line under the gas tank, I opined that it looked like I would have to remove the fan and radiator and wrench it off from below.

Well I did not remove the wiring, so maybe this winter when I'm bored I'll use the last SS line.

Othewise its time to ride. Been working on the K1100LT since Feb. SIck of it! Time to ride!!
