I have a tank that is leaking a little bit from the right rear weld for the tab. Took it to a welder and said he could not weld it with out repainting it. I got a sealing kit and it says that BMW has a lining in it and I can not use it without removing the lining, but does not tell me how. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Had the same situation with my k75 rear left tab got bent and started leaking. Took it to excellent welder who said he thought I should try special epoxy for gas tank repairs. Found an "instant gas tank repair" two part epoxy at O reilly. Just repaired it a month ago and so far, no more leak. _________________ 93 K1100LT

If you want to attempt it yourself: http://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Restoration/products/12/
As far as I know, BMW did not line the tanks. A previous owner may have lined yours.
If you don't want to tackle the repair yourself, you can send it to Eppa Wimbish Aylett, VA (804)769.2324. Contact him first and make sure it's well packed for shipping. _________________ Jim

| Still no luck. There is a coating on the inside of the tank. I even got a sealing kit and it said that there is a coating and not to use the product. The welder said that the coating is compromising the weld. He is going to try it again on Tuesday. Hope it works this time. I am ready to ride again. |

I used some liquid steel or whatever type two part epoxy-ish stuff. I've heard JB Weld works as well. Mine was down under the fuel pump so it was a biatch to get the stuff in there - even with long skinny fingers - but it seems to be holding up well.
I don't think BMW lines the tanks. I've cleaned out a few crappy tanks and have seen no evidence of a lining. Besides, if the tank were lined then how could water cause the aluminum to corrode? It would have to make it through the liner first and then the aluminum - which would mean it's a pretty crappy liner, huh?
Just my .02. YMMV. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
