Hi guys,

I could do with some hands on feedback.

As some of you know I'm on this mission to get quality components at reasonable prices. Laughing

Shox and Plug leads now sorted, exhaust systems undergoing final testing - next on the list are brake discs and brake hoses [ St.St. Flexi ].

Question - what is the concensous of opinion re: Wavy vs Plain discs? [ K1100 ].

Folk quote lighter weight, better water dispertion, better cooling................ the only negative appears to be the price !!!! Rolling Eyes

We're currently having our Cobra Race car disc manufacturer look into the prospects.

The first Wavy disc pattern has been cut and we'll soon be getting the first road trial prototypes. After the trialling and any mods incorporated the pre-production discs will be trialled before production runs commence.

Early K1200s seem to be in the same boat [ ie lack of suitable components] and although I realise that there were [relatively] not that many K1200 bricks - why should we not? Wink

Not sure if you're looking for potential testers for a product you're having made or just opinions?
However, opinion wise, wavy discs serve no other purpose than having people go, 'ooh, look at those wavy discs, they look cool'

They were originally designed for offroad motocross use as they are more resistant to mud / general track crud build up and fling it off more readily, beyond this they serve no purpose but to look nice on a road bike, even if you were able to show they had marginally better cooling properties that'd be a moot point unless you were planning on building a racetrack thrasher?

Aren't wave discs lighter than non-wave discs? Less unsprung weight is a good thing, no?

I really doubt anyone is going to notice the 4oz difference in performance

Ahhhh - it's where that 4ozs is situated. I think it's all to do with gyroscopic forces and overcoming them when flip flopping through a series of bends. Wink

Lighter - certainly Cool

Dispersing more water [ or mud if you like ] certainly Cool

Cooler running and thus more efficiency - I guess so. Cool

Anyway if ALL the above IS B.S. - then I'll take - "don't they look cool"........................ Rolling Eyes

I have a courrier here in the UK that uses his K1100RS for small parcel / package / document deliveries up and down the UK and does more mileage than the proverbial Starship.

He's already trialled a RAM shocker [ 15K miles ] and the Power leads [10K miles ] and will soon be testing the Wavy discs and the new exhaust system.

He's totally independant from RAM [ and myself ]- he just came forward when I asked on the forum for someone to independantly test new products. He's the kind of guy that will tell you if something is not quite right / rubbish.

I'm still waiting for negatives as to the practicality of the Wavy disc - not response to the oh, ahhh looks - that's purely subjective.

I honestly cannot think of any negatives and they do indeed lok cool and people will buy them based on this, after all we don't all NEED 42" LCD HD TV's but most of would like one. Smile

One thing I will say is if you're having some made make sure they're a reputable source, good quality and are checked for fit against the calipers and pads before you settle on a template.
The reason I say this is because during the brief period I ran my little Chinese 125cc crosser a lot of them had the wavy discs and some alledgedly weren't well made and in a couple of cases seized on the pads due to the production quality and fitment issues.
Now it is entirely heresay and therefore could be rubbish but do take care, having a relatively slow light 125cc bike lock up and tip you is bad enough but a big heavy thingummy like our K's, that's a whole other ouch altogether.
(although they will of course be 4oz lighter) Smile

the people that are prototyping the discs have been supplying the discs for the RAM Cobra Race and Road cars for the past 25 years. No problems with credibility there.

We used OEM discs [ new ] for the data and checked that against the OEM manual.

The prototype discs should be with me in the next 2 weeks when they will be trialled for fit and function. Prior to that they are tested on the manufacturer's own static rig.

After that [ and with any mods required ] a pre-production set will be made and trialled on a road bike.

AFTER that trialling an assuming that is successful, the production discs will be made and the first 2 sets off will again be trialled on road bikes.

After that - they'll be GTG.
