Had some hot weather in Seattle, a rareity. Temp gauge was 3/4 up. No fan. Went home and gave the fan direct power. It worked. Went to my manual. Nothing. Is the fan sensor just above the temp sensor? Tap it with a hammer. Buy a new one?

The fan relay is triggered by the Moronic. Unless the red light comes on in the cluster before the fan kicks in then you don't have a problem unless the temp sensor on the head is going bad.

Somewhere on the Internet or in Clymer there's some troubleshooting info for that.

So you are suggesting I have a bad sender, correct. I live in the Seattle area, maybe we could get together.

No, I'm saying it's POSSIBLE it's a bad temp sensor. (either the one for the Moronic or maybe the one for the gauge)

I'd let it idle and see if the red light comes on before the fan.

Here's what happens as the bike heats up:

1) Fan comes on.

2) Failing that, the instrument cluster light comes on.

3) Radiator cap blows.

4) Motonic shuts down the engine.

Given that, the chances of damaging the engine are EXTREMELY slim, especially with the radiator cap in the mix.

Another possibility is that the fan relay is bad. You can monitor the ground wire from the Motronic (either blue/yellow or green/yellow to the fan relay) or swap the horn relay with the fan relay. Since your bike model and year isn't in your signature, (hint, hint) I can't tell you where the fan relay is.

It should heat up pretty quickly today. Laughing

My fan doesn't kick in until almost hitting the red striped bar section on the gauge, maybe it didn't get quite hot enough to need the fan. As Duck said, let it idle for awhile and let the needle get up into the red zone and see if it kicks in.

It's been high 80's in SE WI. I'm fine driving around UNTIL!!! I get in traffic & things slow down. But I don't wait for the fan to kick in. Soon as that happens I tap my special ABS switch up and turn on the fan manually.
I leave it run till I am free & clear of traffic. The temp guage stays right at the 1/2 way mark on my 93 K1100RS.
I took some pics and did a write up on it, it's in tech some where.

Get the spcial ABS switch from the Drake. Easy peasy install, peace of mind when it get's hot out. Long as everything else is up to par, clan coolant, good fan, un pllugged radiator etc. all will be well.

This is a good and easy upgrade.

I really need to do the manual fan switch upgrade on my 1996 K1100LT. As you say, I'm fine so long as I'm not moving from one traffic light to the next. When I get stuck in traffic in 93 degree weather, I start worrying that my blue jeans will spontaneously combust from the heat coming off my bike. By the time the fan comes on, it's really toasty.

I've got an insulation blanket, Jonny Blanket, from the sterring head to the seat under the tank.
I wear pants under vented riding pants with armor in the knees, shins and hips. I don't feel all that hot on the legs for some reason but I do hear the LT's are hotter in that regards.
Probably due to more weather protection.

If you get stuck in traffic or ride when it's warm out, you really should do this mod.

Fan switch is pretty easy.
I used drkko's method. Find fan relay. tap into the blue with yellow stripe wire coming from it. Run that wire to a switch. I had a plain old switch laying around, not as elegant as Ducks OEM ABS but it works. Run another wire from switch to ground. That's it.
Helps to detach fan relay to get at wire. Small Posi Lock Tap-it works nice.

Just ordered a modified OEM switch from Duck. Man, that guy gets up early!

I can't believe I've waited this long to do this mod. Wonder how long it'll take the hair to grow back on the inside of my calves and ankles?
