Clipped a deer Fri. morning at 3: A.M. going thru town at 35mph. Looked down for a second and there it was, trotting across the road right in front of me. Grabbed all the brake I could and hit her in the left rear haunch.
Got off the bike (didn't go down!) to check the damage. Front portion of the fender, gone, driving light hanging by the wires. Forks look good and can't see or feel any wows in the front wheel so I rode it the rest of the way to work.
I think I need to take the blame on this one. If I hadn't looked down I would have had more time to react but I was feeling relatively safe in town. Don't look down in the dark, never look down. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Scott - good to know you're OK, and the bike is relatively OK.
Between the deer and crazy cagers (one of which pulled out right in front of me yesterday) there is no way a rider can be too careful. _________________ Jim

I dunno, didn't check on her but if her leg wasn't broken she had a huge hematoma on her ass.
Anyone have a mystic red front front fender? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

That is something I've wondered about the PR2's - Why would you want the groves to push the water inward toward the contact patch as you rolled? The rear obviously does the opposite. I've noticed this on some other tire combinations as well. _________________ tlp

If the tire is ROLLING then how would this push water into the tread? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The solid sections of a tire will displace water to the sides and voids (grooves). It seem like when rolling, the front tire tread pattern on the PR2s would direct water from the outside in and against the water coming in from the other side - thus creating a greater possiblity for hydroplaning.
But now that I think about it, the profile on a motorcycle tire is probably round enough and the contact patch small enough that the grooves would be lifting from the road surface before they have time to push much water laterally. On the other hand, the wider, flatter contact patch on auto tires suggests that more "pushing" of water through the grooves is likely to occur there. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a groove pattern on an auto tire oriented the same direction as the front PR2.
Where I most care about avoiding hydroplaning is when I'm leaned over - not sure it matters which way the grooves are angled then, just so the water can find a way out from under the contact patch.
We aren't the first to wonder about this:

You're not going to crash in the rain from hydroplaning during a turn unless you're wicking it up through puddles. If you wash out in the rain leaned over in a turn it will most likely be caused by the fact that the coefficient of friction for a wet road is less than that of a dry road. Just like if you lock up your rear and skid on wet pavement - that is not hydroplaning unless the contact patch is lifted from the road surface by a layer of water. If the contact patch is still in contact with the road then you're just skidding on wet pavement.
I've hydroplaned on my bikes before. It takes quite a bit of speed and a puddle for that to happen on our heavy bikes with relatively small contact patches comparted to cars. The times I've hydroplaned have been in excess of 70 mph going through standing water. If you're riding turns hard at those speeds in wet weather you'll still probably skid and wash out long before you find a puddle to hydroplane on. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
