my maiden post so here goes !

I have a '94 model K1100RS with 36,000 on the clock.Bike has run fine recently.Today I was out riding ,conditions dry and warm, and having covered about 60 miles,I slowed to take a turn and the bike cut out,TOTAL electrical power failure everything dead,instruments/clock blank.
I checked all fuses, all OK,after a few minutes it started normally and covered another 60 miles without incident ?
Battery/connections are good,I checked the connections to the Motronic unit, all seemed fine.
Any thoughts? Question

IF it was the side stand switch, wouldn't all the power still be there, he said he lost all electrical power..

Yeah, if the clock is going out then it's something other than the sidestand switch.

If EVERYTHING is going out and the battery connections are good then maybe it's a bad ground.

If the clock is going blank too then it's probably not the ignition switch.

Was your clock going out too? I don't see how a bad ignition switch would cause that.

To be completely honest i don't remember if it did, it's just that when i pulled everything apart i found a wire broken at the switch which was pulled away when the steering was turned then made contact again when i straightened the bars.

I had the same problem earlier this year, and guess what, I cant remember if the clock went out either!. So this is more than likely no help at all.

Cheers.

Rich.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I was wondering about an Earthing problem and will check all the main earthing points beyond the battery itself. The Battery is a fairly new BMW/EXIDE item.

Re the Ignition switch I had thought of looking at that too as there is no steering lock function and the key cannot be removed on the Parking/Auxillary function. It only works in the ignition position?

Overall the bike is in excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically and shows all the signs of having been maintained and serviced to a high standard.

Yes, there is a steering lock. Crank the bars ALMOST all of the way to the right and turn the key all of the way counterclockwise. If it hasn't been used in a while then it may take some fiddling to get it to work.

Thanks again FD ! YOU WERE EXACTLY RIGHT.I turned the bars to the right,I found the "sweet spot", twiddled the key back and forth for a little and hey presto I now have a steering lock and parking lights.

The Owners manual says nothing about turning the bars to the right to engage the steering lock (page 12).My casual attempts to find suitable bar a position previously had met with no success till I read and followed your post. Cool

I did not see this (instruments/clock blank). It is not the ignition switch,
the clock is hot wired. It has to be some major wiring like ground or
positive from battery. Mybe ground on the gearbox or the little positive
wire on the starter that is installed together with the main positive from
the battery.Check for corrosion on the gearbox grounding point.
Regards Palle.

Starter motor? Take it out, clean it, look at the brushes.

Thanks Jarnbak,I have already cleaned up the earthing points near the gearbox,I am hoping this was the cause (?) as clearly something interrupted the main power flow on either the negative or positive side.
I will wait to see if it happens again so far no repeat of that fault.
