97K1100LT

New Battery
New Fuel Filter
New used rad fan. It was working...but I can't tell you now, because the bike doesn't get to the temperature it would turn on before it dies.

Now the bike will drive 10-15 miles come to the first mark on the temperature gauge to the left of 12:00, and it will then stumble once, start looking for a place to get out of traffic, because it is going to stumble a second time, and die like you hit the kill switch.

My guess....vapor lock? I have checked the grounds everything seems tight. Some sort of electric fault that can't handle the heat?

Let the bike set 10-15 minutes it starts right back up. drives until it starts getting up to temperature again....and dies. let it set longer....it will run longer.

Any way to "check for vapor lock"? Check for why the thing stops running? I guess take the flash codes with me and try to see what comes up when it won't start?

Thanks
Ken

Classic symptoms of a Hall Effect sensor going bad. When the bike gets hot they cut out.

You can try removing the small square timing cover on the front right of the engine and hitting the HES with a heat gun to verify if that's your problem.

Here's what a Hall Effect Sensor looks like:

Mybe a loose connector on the water temp sensor to the ecu.Plug behind
the fan.Bad connection = low temp to the ecu,so when the engine gets
hot,it still gets the fuel for a cold engine, way to ritch.

Vapour lock is not an issue with these bikes.

so sounds like I need to get my heatgun. It is in storage, so next time I am at the north storage unit I will pick it up and try that test. I have had a truck that had this issue, and it was in the distributor, so sounds like this halls sensor is acting as the distributor as well.

Sounds like a rather expensive part....kind of kbiked out this week. LOL

My 95 RS has a similiar issue, the difference is it stalls only when in slow traffic or stopped and the temp guage is approaching the RED area. It doesn't seem to be a rich condition as I'm getting around 48 mpg. Very Happy

Your thoughts???

Regards, Paul

Sounds like yours is a different problem than mine Paul. Mine isn't getting as hot either, mine is just coming up to temperature.

It is a cool night, so I am going to try to get a ride in to my girlfriends hopefully it will make all the way. Found the heat gun, so I think I will ride it home in the morning, take off the fairing stuff, again, and try the heat gun.

Sounds like a rather expensive, and time consuming job this Hall's sensor.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Depends how you go about it - if you buy a new HS from BMW then yes, expensive. If you buy a used but known good HS it will be moderate. If you remove the HS and then solder/rivet new sensors it will pretty cheap.

Here's a site for the new HES

http://www.newark.com/honeywell-s-c/2av54/hall-effect-magnetic-sensor/dp/96F1986?Ntt=2AV54

For a used known HES there is Flying Ducks or Beemer Boneyard or Motobins UK and they will be able to ship to you.

If you search this forum you should be able to spot more on HES diagnosis and replacement.

All the best and keep us informed and some pics too please if you are dong the job Wink
