Replaced my clutch cable about a year ago. Still have the instructions that I printed out as to how to adjust it. Lubed the barrel with a synthetic Teflon lube when I installed it and also over the winter. Pulled in the clutch yesterday to start it and "TINK" the cable let go at the barrel.
So, what am I missing here or just bad luck with the cable?

It's my understanding that you're not supposed to ever lube the clutch cable as there is a teflon liner inside the cable sheath. Can't imagine that your lube would have damaged that, though. _________________ '02 - GL1800

I use only the BMW supplied cable. At the clutch lever there is a much longer length of cable soldered inside the barrel than you find on some other makes of cable. The BMW barrel is longer so there is more gripping length to the cable. It has the vertical bit that goes in the lever and is extended along the cable with another circular bit. The inferior ones only have the vertical bit that goes in the lever. They do not last in my experience.
Hope it helps
Tony. |

I only lube where the barrel pivots in the lever and the other end where it pivots in the fork.
Tony: I assume it was a BMW cable as I bought it at my local dealer. Can't say that I remember it being marked as such or what the package was marked. I will check that out when the new one shows up. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

New cable came today. It does have BMW 3273 2324960 4007 printed on the cable and also has a BMW tag attached. I hope to have time to change it out this weekend. Sure sucks spending so much time in the cage, especially when the sun has been out. _________________ 1993 K1100LT
