You'll have to excuse me because I'm not mechanically inclined so if I sound like a dope that's because I probably am.

I've had my RS for 3 years and fan would come on when the temp neared the red-line and would turn off when the needle moved down to the next tick.

This changed 6 weeks ago when I installed a GPS (a birthday present from my amazing other). Ever since then the fan has been coming on when the temp gage is nearly dead center but it always shut off. Today I went out and before I got 1/2 mile from home it came on and it stayed on. It was 42 degrees! So I drove it home and parked it.

I just went out in the driveway and started it up and let it idle. I watched the temp gage and it hardly moved it all for 5 minutes or so and then it went straight up toward the red-line in seconds, the fan came on and drove the temp down towards dead center but it never shut off.

I figured I fudged something when I wired the GPS, maybe the Motronic, but I don't know.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

We need some details on how you wired up the GPS.

It was nothing special. I just connected the two leads to the battery. I did have to disconnect the Motronic to get to the battery.

First thing I'd try is to disconnect the GPS at the battery & see if the problem is still there

A lot of funky things can happen with a loose or dirty motronic connector - you might try checking out the connector and then cleaning and reseating it. CRC makes a good contact cleaner available at many auto parts stores, make sure to get the one for sensitive signal connectors.

+1 on reseating the Motronic connector.

I didn't see Ted's response until after I disconnected the GPS and reset everything. It's still acting funky but I'll try cleaning the Motronic contacts and see what effect that has. Thanks again...

I've been away for a few days but had time to clean the connectors and re-set everything but it made no difference. Fan still comes on early and never shuts off.

Time I think to go into more detailed diagnosis... My understanding is that it works like this -- the coolant sensor feeds info to the Motronic, which using that temperature info determines when to signal the fan relay to turn the fan on or off. So, there are basically three failure points - the sensor, the relay, or the motronic. Note there are TWO sensors, one in the waterpump for the gauge and another up at the engine that triggers the motronic - this is how the motronic temp sensor can fail and the dash gauge still work perfectly.

Check here for the method to pull Motronic errors and to test the fan wiring and relay:

Testing the coolant sensor:

Could the fan relay be sticking? Here is another post on how to test the fan relay:

Be ready for the possibility you might have a failing Motronic unit - this is so exceedingly rare though I really hesitated to mention it.
