Hi Folks,

Took a GREAT ride today, about 60 miles on the parkways to get the blood and oil flowing. As the temp never really got above freezing I used the windscreen and it worked great. Until I was in the last 10 minutes of the ride.

I had pushed the switch (on the dash of the K75RT) down and the screen went down, but the switch caught on something in the down position. I realized this after about 5 seconds and pushed on the raise side, the screen went up about 2" with that. When I tried to lower it back to its resting position of all the way down, it wouldn't budge. I pushed up again for a sec and it happily went up, but no love going down. When I got back home I tried the down again, even giving the windscreen a little downward push, nothing.

So, the screen happily goes up, no longer down. Did I perhaps fry something out when the down switch hung up in the down position for a few seconds after the screen had returned to full down?

Thanks!

Ted

I would doubt it. You may be due for a switch cleaning, or a new switch.

If the screen is going up you didnt' fry the motor.

Another possibility could be that the motor drive gear could have "jumped" on both of the flex cables thus putting the screen out of time with the limit switches.

The only way to fix that is to remove it and manually reset it.

The setup is supposed to be that the screen motor shuts itself off at the limit of up or down, regardless of holding the switch on.

I'd hazard a guess that one of your relays has died - your situation sounds very much like what I had and was resolved here http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9090; there was a load of useful information put forward in that topic.

Try swapping the relays around and see whether that makes a difference to which way the screen will work.

Temp never got above freezing?

My old mk1 mr2 with pop up lights, manual says leave up if frost expected, or the fuse/relay will decide.

Maybe it got caught caught on ice?????

Holy cow you ain't kidding, that thread is a goldmine!

Looks like it is switch or more likely relay. Good excuse to bribe Jim to come over and help me finally properly service the windscreen Smile

Fortunately all has been dry and free of ice, yesterday's warm temps made sure of that - though good point, the very cold temps might have made it even harder to go up and down with the neglected maintenance.

Be happy to do that, Ted. Give me a shout sometime.

If it's the switch, some contact cleaner will probably take care of that. Switching relays would help you determine if it's a relay problem.

Thanks Jim!

So it looks like the course of action is to:

1. Clean and lube the internals, make sure everything is as it should be and correctly lined up.
2. Find and switch the relays to see if the down one is bad
3. Test the switch

Where the heck are the relays anyway?!?

The most likely culprit is the switch:

http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6516

The relays are with the motor. Gray in color. You can swap them as a test.

Pushing the button down shouldn't have any negative impact because, as mentioned, there are built in switches on the motor assembly to stop it.

Lube the silver rods with spray silicone lubricant. It lubes without having a tendency to pick up dirt like oils do.

If only there were a place where I could buy good used parts Wink

Thanks to all for the help everyone, I feel a lot better about this now.

Now if only I could find someone who knows how to remove and clean the idle control valve on an aging ES300 Smile

That's probably easier to do...

I can take a look Ted, I think I still have my original dash switch off the '95 that I'm not using anymore if you want it.

I picked up a '97 LH switch assy so I could have it on the left bar instead of the dash.

Howdy Scott - that would be awesome, it would sure make troubleshooting it easier! How hard was the switch assembly conversion by the way?

It wasn't too bad, not quite plug & play though.
I had to reuse harness connector off of the '95 switch as it wasn't the same as the '97 one.
I think there may be an "adapter" harnes out there but I didn't have it so I just reused my old connector.

I did find the switch, it's been cleaned and works pretty good.

FYI: With the windscreen switch in the combo switch you need an intermediate harness. Not needed for the dash switch.

That's kind of what I thought, but I wasn't sure.
Thanks for the clarification.

I switched my windscreen switch from the dash to the combo switch too. But then I got used to using it for cruise control on my other bikes so I ditched the separate cruise control switch, wired the cruise up to the combo switch and went back to the dash switch for the windscreen. I use the cruise switch much more than the windscreen so it works better for me that way.

Hi guys...

This may be too simplistic for the problem that faces Ted, BUT last October I had a similar situation with the windscreen only moving sometimes either up/down. I thought at first it was either a switch or relay problem so I upluged and took the screen assembly off to inspect, I also used my VOM to see if there was a signal from the dash switch in both positions and there was... What I really discovered was that the Screen "Cam Gear box" was filled completely with a tarry crud, as were the guide tubes for the flex-cable, as well as 'goo-ing' up the cable itself. Seems ( ie: conjecture ) that the cold ( below freezing) had thickened the viscosity of the "tar" to the point that the motor cam would not turn even though no fuse had blown ! So I then just cleaned and lightly "moly-ed" everything I could and re-assembled. Viola ! It works.... I hope Ted's problem is this simple, but I still remain miffed as to what the 'tarry" crud was and how it came to fill the "gear cam box" and cable ways to such an extent...

Good luck Ted............// Ernie in NH
