Stoked Steve

Took the little guy to the local, privately owned Military Aviation Musuem here in Virginia Beach today. Lots of cool old planes, most of them in flyable condition and flown regularly.

This is a private facility and is all owned by one guy. It's out in the farm fields in rural VB. We will often be sitting on the beach and see these planes cruise by. It's a pretty neat sight to see a P-51 Mustang go roaring by, 100' (30m) over the ocean.

Their latest addition to the collection, a B-17 named Chuckie that he aquired from the estate of a deceased collector in Texas. Rumored to have cost over three million dollars. When a local reporter asked how much they paid for it, the answer was, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it". They flew it here from Texas a few weeks ago. It was a six hour flight with the cockpit temperture at -6 (F!) and no heat. She burns fuel at the rate of 200 gallons an hour! They loaded up 1700 gallons of fuel for the flight.

Note the creative use of tennis balls to plug the exhaust ports.

And last but not least, the obligatory BMW motorcycle content:

A very cool collection and a nice facility. They are in the process of adding another hanger for just British war planes. They're even bringing a control tower over from the UK that is being disassembled brick by brick and then re-built over here.

I may have to put that on my visit list this year, that'll give the Battleship Wisconsin crews time to get more of it ready for touring next year.
