Just for once, instead of giving silly answers on other peoples threads, I actually have a question to ask, as I am slightly baffled.

Just replaced the water/oil pump seals, no biggie I know, but I have noticed something a bit strange.

When I started the bike up I noticed a faint glow from the water light.
Everything works. The temp guage goes just into the red (it has always done that) and the fan kicks in. There are no leaks and everything seems fine.

I have the led conversion in the instuments, could it be something to do with the water light led?.

The thing is, I have no real idea how long this has been going on, it might be ages, but as most of my riding is in daylight, just never noticed it before.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Rich.

Never had that occur on any of my LED'd bikes. The alternator light has a slight glow on some but never the temp light. Seems kind of odd though as the temp light is illuminated by the Motronic on 4 valve Ks so my guess would be that it's binary, not analog.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it though if the fan is coming on when it should.

You should sue the guy who sold you the LEDs. Rolling Eyes

Rich,

Since you just did a pump r&r- is it possible that you switched the two sensor wires when you reassembled?

It happened to me 4 years ago when I bought my K-RS. The indy wrench (probably working very late at night) who had maintained the bike had switched the wires- they will interchange easily.

Goofy results occur at the "dash" lights and gauges.

Just a possibility

That's not it I don't think. The Motronic gets it's temp signal from the sensor on the head outlet. All the one on the water pump does is feed the temp gauge.

Thanks for the replys.

I did put the oil pressure switch wire and temp sensor wire on the wrong way round, and noticed very quickly Confused .

Took my brick to work today, its a 24 mile round trip, not much, but just enough to see if anything was leaking, and nothing is.

Apart from the torrential rain that decended just as I left for home, and the oil light glowing which after a very quick stop and a wiggle of the wire now dosnt (whew) everything seems fine. The temperature didnt go up much due to the weather!!.

However, I did notice that the exhaust pipe is a bit black on the end, so I am beggining to wonder if the temp sensor on the head is on its way.

I will investigate.

Cheers.

Rich.

Or I could bring the Anti panic system into play, and stick a bit of black tape over the light and not worry Very Happy .

The oil light will come on in a torrential rain - if the little rubber boot gets filled with water. AMHIK...

It's likely a little current leakage in the transistor that drives the light inside the Motronic unit (remember, the temp light also gets used to count out the fault codes too) ... they probably never considered the use of an LED in the design where a current in their margin of error would cause the indicator to "show" - not a problem, just a situation not designed for.

Guess if you want it to go away, switch back to an incandescent bulb; I've got LEDs (**not** from Duck, so no reflection on his) but only in the bulbs that get stressed - backlighting, low gas, high beam, bulb test (could be on a long time) and the indicators (wear from "cycling" on-off) but have left the rest as I've never gone thru a bulb in any of those positions in 4 Ks and 15yrs of using them...

HTH

Thanks for the info guys. I think I am worrying needlessly. Its just I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to looking after my brick.
I am planning some decent European tours this year, so wanted to get everything just right. I have always found that keeping everything up together pays dividends with reliability. But I am talking to the experts here......

Cheers.

Rich.

I fitted LED's in my cluster, now got 2 niggles, the Main beam warning is TOO bright & one of the ABS lamps flickers & always glows dimly. As they don't illuminate for very long, they will be going back to incandescent bulbs.
IMNSHO LED's are ideal for the illumination, but a PITA for circuits for which they were not designed, so for me it's filaments in Main Beam, Charging, ABS & Temperature.

How do you know? Laughing

That water has to get past the radiator because the temp sensor for the Moronic is on the outlet on the front of the head. Must have been A LOT of water to do that. Shocked It might also have gotten into the engine wiring harness at the connector.

When I was on the way to Seattle, I went through a torrential downpour - in Arkansas, I think. The oil light came on - I had to make a couple of phone calls to find out that when the rubber boot fills with water, the oil pressure light can turn on. I was freaked out - I'd never had the oil light come on before.

A friend of Gwen's (I forget his name) told me it was the connector down on the bottom at the front with the rubber boot on it. The oil pressure sending unit. Torrential downpour = oil light on. As soon as the rain stopped and everything dried out, the oil light went out. Where is the oil pressure sending unit if not on the bottom at the front? Clymer's shows it on the bottom at the front.

My bad. I misread and thought you were talking about the temp sensor.
