to waste. Sun shining, around 24 C or so, the Murray River is flowing like it hasn't flowed for several years, and I have the choice of staying home and doing web shite for someone, or hopping on the bike and running up to the Riverland for a bit of a look. Difficult decision, NOT!
So I decided Blanchetown - about 125 Km from home - would be the first port of call, seeing that is where the first lock and weir is on the river, and looking at the lock will tell me how much the river is up. On arriving at the lock, I find the water is about the same height both sides; normally it would be a 3.6 metre (that's nearly 12 ft for the imperialists amongst us) difference.
The lock proper is in the foreground of the picture, and downstream is to the right. You can see there is no difference Of course we have the obligatory sign showing the level of all the major (recorded) floods on the river.
Well, almost all the floods - 1956, the biggest on record, would need the pole to be another nine feet or so taller
So I wandered a couple of hundred metres upriver from the lock and came to a boat ramp with this.
I'm not sure exactly what it is telling us to be careful about, but it probably doesn't matter now as the river sure isn't low any more.
So I decided to head up river another few miles/Km to a place called Morgan, where lunch might be had and I might check out a couple of possible places to buy a block of land on the river.
On arriving there, we find the river has spread itself about a bit
If my recollection of the spot is correct, the row of buoys way out there is around where the bank would normally be. A bit in front and to the left of the orange buoy, you might just see the top of a sign which, if memory serves me right, tells houseboats not to moor there.
And last, but definitely not least
The only down side to the day was the crap load of locusts I rode through on the way home; I now have a major cleanup of both the bike and my boots.
PS drikko - thanks for all the water from up your way _________________ David, owner of:

Don't get me wrong - we really are glad to see the river with as much water in it as it has now. It needs a good flood every so often to keep it in good health.
And of course changes in the river levels get the yabbies on the move, and there is nothing like a good feed of yabbies. For the non-Aussies, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_yabby _________________ David, owner of:

Nice photos. Haven't seen green grass in quite a while. We still have snow on the ground in the Chicago area. Sucks. _________________ 2000 R1100RT
