|
|
Ok, here't the problem... Lately when riding my 1993 K1100LT, it will suddenly bog down and hardley run. Full throttle will only get you to about 55 mph. After a mile or two it will just as suddenly go back to running correctly. So far I've replaced the fuel filter and installed a fuel pump tune up kit. I rode 250 miles yesterday. At about 170 miles into the ride, it started acting up. After a mile or so it started running good again, and ran great the rest of the day. Any Ideas???? sugestions???? This is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for any help. _________________ Lifes too short to ride an ugly Motorcycle |

Quick way to troubleshoot a dying pump - Next time it happens give the side of the tank a good thwack - not hard enough to dent the aluminum, just enough to jar it (and the pump.) When pumps start to go bad often they will bog down or simply stop suddenly, and early on when this starts happening a good jar will often bring them instantly back to life. As you can guess, the behavior steadily gets worse and the thwacks stop working. _________________

When was the fuel filter changed last? Could be indications of plugging up. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks Ted, I'll try that. I don't mind buying the new pump if it will cure this. Kenny _________________ Lifes too short to ride an ugly Motorcycle |

Kinked fuel line? Water in the gas? Tank vent line clogged? Something clogging the fuel inlet inside the tank?
(Maybe this will never happen but) what if you take weight off of the seat as it's sputtering? Mine had something causing pressure on the motronic and it would run smoothly while I was standing on the pegs. (Hope this isn't it, because it's costly.) _________________ RIP (Roy Parker)

UPDATE!!!! I went for a ride today and it started the same old thing. Ran like crap, then good, then like crap... I just happened to catch it when it was running bad. I put the bike on the centerstand, and checked the header pipes. #1 hot #2cold #3cold #4 hot. Ok, its only running on two cylinders. Why??? My guess is a coil going bad. Anyone else have an idea please chime in..... _________________ Lifes too short to ride an ugly Motorcycle |

YES
The coils are paired. 1&4 and 2&3.

I had a similar situation a few years ago. Only running on outside 2 of the 4. Difference being it happened all at once.
Ended up being a couple of bad valves in the center 2 cyl at the same time. _________________ Ride safe.

Fortunately on off on off sounds more like a coil. I'd go for cleaning the earth first. _________________ Bikes:

One other thing to check. K1100LTs are notorious of cracked exhaust pipes where the four pipes weld into one near the left foot peg. A good welder capable of welding stainless steel can fix the problem. I've had mine crack three times in my 140,000 miles of ownership. I've also had the front exhaust nuts to the head come loose resulting in a blown exhaust gasket. In each case, the overly lean condition sensed by the 02 senor results in the kind of cutting out that your experiencing. In essense, the lean condition is outside the range of the sensor.
I've also had this problem occur when the crankcase breather hose to the air filter box cracked. It's easy to identify sense you will usually see an oily film on the outside of the hose. If you pull off the left side panel, you can see the hose running to the airbox by looking just in front of the fuse panel. If its oily, its cracked.
